  • The loop of traffic noise played over all scenes in Meg's flat gets ridiculously loud during the scene where Dennis breaks off the engagement.

Lexie tries to comfort Julie, who is taking her mother's death worse than she expected. Ann tries to points out to a very agitated Jenny that she can't prove Steve Formby confessed to her grandmother's murder. When she won't calm down, Ann has her taken to solitary. Ettie is found guilty and sentenced to 2 years' probation: the Judge asks to see Ettie in his chambers. May and Nora are worried that Lou has got hold of the gun - or even Joan. Judge Boreham tells Meg he only wants to make sure that Ettie understands his parole, but he is secretly charmed by her and asks Ettie for a date. Lou denies any knowledge of the "object", when Nora asks her if she took it. Mervin asks Joyce for her opinion on "helping" inmates and she tells him of how Ray Proctor tried to help an inmate and got into trouble. Meg tells Joyce she's decided not going to take the Governor's job and Joyce has to confess she's already told him the opposite. Ettie tells the women about her plans to buy a block of flats so there will be somewhere for they to live when they get out of prison. Dennis hits the bottle and argues with Meg that she didn't consult him. Nora has no luck with Lexie either, but she says if she had it she'd have been gone long ago. Mervin and Joyce are embarrassed by Dennis' sullenness when they come round to dinner. Terri gives Joan a neck massage in the staff room , but Joan clearly understands the association this has with lesbianism and asks her to stop in case anyone comes in. Terri tells Joan she's given notice on her flat and asks to move in with Joan. Dennis gets so drunk he falls out of his wheelchair and refuses to let Meg help him up. May and Nora enlist Willie to help find the gun during her trading activities, but her shriek in reaction to the word "gun" nearly gives the game away. She points out that a gun without bullets is not much use anyway. Dennis tells Meg he doesn't think their relationship is working and wants to call off the wedding. Joan complains that the classes are undermining discipline, but Ann responds that the work quotas have been exceeded by 20%. It's hard to see how as when Willie comes to the laundry to talk to Lou, she is the only one working there. Willie gives the game away about the gun to Lou, who then tells everyone else. Joan catches Lexie searching Alice's locker while she does a laundry pickup. Nora organises a cell search, and most of the women agree to go along with it. Dennis has a flashback to him and Meg decorating the flat. Nothing is found in the cell search. Joan's tactless remarks reduce Meg to tears in the staff room. Lou suspects that Nora has the gun herself and she only suggested the search to divert attention. Meg arrives home to find Dennis packing a suitcase. At the Council meeting, Alice suggests buying a printing press with the five thousand dollars to be spent on work areas. Meg can't persuade Dennis to stay so they say a tearful farewell. An unidentified hand is seen collecting the gun from its hiding place underneath the washing machine in the laundry .
