  • Vera accuses Jim of betrayal for reporting the conversation he overheard. Paul offers to arrange a celebrant quickly to marry Kevin and Doreen. Jock sympathises with Vera, telling her that he was suspended once himself. Bea sulks tearfully for most of her next meeting with Ken, as she still believes he is interested in Kerry. The Department gives permission for Doreen's wedding and Doreen asks Erica to give her away. Jock goes with Vera when she tries again to recover the painting, and the pressure he puts on David is enough to make him hand it over this time. Lizzie finds a lot of costumes left over from a previous play: Ali Baba". Sharon makes herself very unpopular with heartless remarks about Doreen's wedding and Jim's family. Bea congratulates Kerry in succeeding where they had failed and getting rid of Vera. Vera goes out for a meal with Jock and tells him of her fears that she will lose her job after being suspended twice. He promises he will make sure the truth comes out. The next day he returns the painting to Kerry and threatens to make sure she never paints again, so Kerry goes to Erica to withdraw her accusations against Vera. Erica warns David that Kerry's privileges will be withdrawn if either of them give her any more trouble and that she will not be recommending that Kerry will paroled into his custody. Doreen has lied about her size and the wedding dress Kevin has bought needs letting out. Kevin and Doreen are married in the garden . Harry Bone is refused permission to visit Doreen again by Jock, but Jock tells him he might be able to: persuade" Doreen to change her mind ... for a fee. Judy slaps Sharon when she jealously destroys a pot plant she was going to give to Doreen as a wedding present. Lizzie remembers Marilyn and Eddie and wonders if they could distract the screws long enough for Bea and Ken to spend a little time together in private. Kerry has an idea and suggests art classes, and Erica invites a reporter along to observe. Ken is also present and Kerry tells him to go straight to the rec room store cupboard when a little scuffle breaks out between Phyllis and Doreen. Bea is to be the model and she goes to the storeroom to: change" - into someone completely different, though the Arab-style costume makes it hard to see the switch. Bea has a heart to heart with Ken in the storeroom . Vera notices that Sharon has written on her drawing that Bea and Ken are in the storeroom , and rushes to the model to pull away the head-dress to reveal Judy. She then asks the reporter to leave before opening the storeroom door and catching Bea and Ken together . Doreen grabs Sharon's piece of paper and lets Bea know who lagged on her. Erica bans Ken from the prison, confiscates Kerry's art materials and has Sharon moved to a single cell. She asks Vera to let it be known that if any harm comes to Sharon, Bea and her gang will be held responsible. On the way to her new cell, Sharon overhears Jock threatening Doreen and even slapping her across the face when she refuses to reconsider and agree to sell her house. Sharon approaches Jock when he leaves Doreen's cell asking for protection in return for keeping quiet about what she just heard. Captain Barton tells Lizzie that her two sons were fostered and moved away, but her daughter Marcia was married in Melbourne 20 years ago. He tells her he put an advert in the paper and a woman claiming to be Marcia had replied. Vera and Jock find Sharon lying at the bottom of a flight of stairs with her neck broken . Judy is kneeling beside her...

  • In the previous episode, Kerry was supposedly the best Australian artist since Sidney Nolan. In this episode, her agent compares her to Brett Whiteley ... whose daughter Arkie was later to appear in Prisoner.

Vera locks the women in their cells, while Jock reports Sharon' s death to Erica. Judy yells to Bea that it's her fault they are being locked in and accuses Bea of killing Sharon. Vera tells the police that Sharon was pushed and suggests Bea and Kerry as possible suspects. The detective (who frankly looks a bit of a tit with his sunglasses perched in his hair ) is more interested to question Judy. Judy tells the police about finding Sharon's body and repeats her accusation against Bea, but is forced to admit that she had an argument with Sharon herself shortly before her death. David is turned away from the gates when visiting Kerry and realises something is going on, especially as he has seen a police car and an ambulance. Kerry tells the police everyone hated Sharon, but she is ruled out as a suspect when Vera confirms she was nowhere near the stairs at the time of the murder. David phones a journalist to tip him off that there's a story at Wentworth, taking care to suggest an angle that will get publicity for Kerry. Vera is convinced of Bea's guilt and is pleased when she is asked to take Bea to Erica's office. Doreen is nervous about being left on her own. Det Sgt Teagan dismisses Bea's alibi that she was in the laundry and suggests Bea had a motive for killing Sharon after she ruined her chances with Ken. Judy vows to find out herself who killed Sharon and exact vengeance. Meg reports this to Erica who decides that Judy should be moved to isolation. The police cannot find any real evidence and have to conclude that Sharon's death was an accident. Jock tries to convince Vera that Sharon's death was an accident then visits Judy in isolation and tells her what the police have decided. The press report of Sharon's death is angled for its implications for Kerry's parole, though a subhead reveals an unsuspected Middle Eastern interest in the Australian penal system with its: Iranian leader calls revolt". Kerry is annoyed as she knows that David planted the story. Erica tells Paul she can't recommend Kerry for parole, though Paul argues that he is punishing Kerry for her agent's misdeeds. Paul gives Lizzie the information on Marcia, and Lizzie seems to think it's possible she could really be her daughter. Kevin finds a strange man lounging against his van issuing veiled threats about the consequences if Doreen doesn't sell her house. Ted Douglas orders Erica to change her parole recommendation on Kerry, as the Department feels her presence in Wentworth is an embarrassment. David tells Kerry he's pre-sold six of her paintings for a thousand dollars each. Bea points out to Lizzie that she can't lose anything by seeing the woman who claims to be Marcia. Erica tells David that she is recommending Kerry's parole, but on condition that she must have no further contact with him. When he protests he has business matters to finalise with Kerry, Erica graciously gives him five minutes to terminate their agreement. Kevin tells Doreen he's against her selling the house and she's unable to say what's worrying her as Jock is supervising the visit and sticking close to them. She tries to whisper in his ear, but he doesn't catch what she says. Jock drops a hint to Jim that Doreen and Kevin were allowed physical contact against the rules so they may have passed something between them, and Jim goes to search for contraband in Doreen's cell. He finds miniatures of brandy in her pillow case and Erica sends Doreen to solitary for two days. David arranges for his friend Leonard to collect and pay for Kerry's paintings. Jock visits Doreen in solitary to put further pressure on her: he warns her that if she can't make her mind up, he might have to: give her a push" - as he admits he did with Sharon...

    OTHER CHARACTERS
    Leader of the demolition crew
    Reporter outside Wentworth
Policeman interviewing Kevin (not seen on Channel 5 - see below)

  • Written by George Mallaby
  • Directed by Bill Hughes
  • The writing is cleverly ambiguous when Paul asks Lizzie if she has any doubts about Marcia's identity. She replies simply: "No doubts at all", without saying what it is she is so sure about.

Doreen wakes from a nightmare to find Jock is there to remind her how easily she can get a good night's sleep. Kevin's car has been vandalised and the tyres let down. Kerry meets an old acquaintance from her days on the game, Helen Smart, who is inside on a (very) short sentence. Kevin is interviewed by the police about the damage to his car but decides not to pursue the matter when the police ask to speak with his wife. Jock takes Doreen to the staff room phone so she can tell the solicitor to sell, but Vera catches them, so he pretends they were phoning Kevin. Surprisingly, even though she knows that Doreen was supposed to be in solitary, she tells Jock she will have to decide whether to report the matter. Kevin goes to check up on Doreen's house and finds a demolition crew preparing the house and the ones on either side of it to be knocked down so that a block of flats can be built on the site. Kevin rushes to Wentworth to see Doreen, but Meg won't let him see her as she is still in solitary. He denies he had anything to do with smuggling in the bottles and asks to see Bea instead. Helen volunteers to get a message to Doreen and then to pass the reply on to Kevin when she is released the following day. Jock is recognised by Helen and she tells Kerry he's known for his violence against prostitutes (and his nickname is: The Highland Flinger"). Meg overhears and tells Helen to stop peddling smutty gossip. Jock tells Kerry her parole has been granted. When Helen is taking Doreen's meal to solitary, she drops the tray on the floor to give her time to pass a note to her. Jock crawls to Vera to try to get her not to report him and invites her out for a drink after work. Kerry is harassed by reporters at the front gate when she's released. Just as she is starting to feel really uncomfortable in her new home, David phones Kerry to find out how she is, but he reminds her he can't come round to stay with her as she asks. Helen barely has time at her release to read Doreen's reply and flush it away before she is searched. Paul tells Judy she has been refused permission to go Sharon's funeral as she isn't related to her. Kevin phones Paul and asks to meet him on the outside, where he tells Paul about Doreen's claim in the note that she sold the house or: he would have killed me". By some miracle, Helen is right outside the phone box as he makes the call . When he reports Kevin's story back to Erica she tells Paul she can't act on hearsay evidence. When Doreen is questioned, she denies the whole story. However Erica suspects something is not right, and tells all the male officers - Jim, Jock and a token spotty youth - that they must be accompanied by a female member of staff at all times. Lizzie meets Marcia and agrees to see her again the following day when she will bring Lizzie's grand-daughter Josie. Judy attacks Bea in the rec room, so Doreen takes her to one side and tells her it wasn't Bea who killed Sharon. When Judy demands to know who did, Doreen agrees to do so but tells her it doesn't matter as she won't be able to do anything about it anyway without proof. Vera arrives at the bar where she is to meet Jock to see him receiving an envelope from Mr Westmore. David arrives at Kerry's flat angry at newspaper reports that she has a new agent: he tells her he is upset at the though of losing her, and not just as a client. Lizzie meets Josie, who lets slip that she has to have a lot of time off school... Judy waits on the stairs until Jock comes along and tells him she knows he killed Sharon . Vera's suspicions about Jock are confirmed when she hears from Erica about Doreen's complaints against a male officer. She lets Jock know she saw him with Mr Westmore then casually informs him Erica has called a staff meeting on the subject and she'll see him there...

The scene represented by the sentence in italics was cut for the Channel 5 broadcast. Thanks to Björn Wallgren for highlighting this and for providing this transcript of the dialogue of the missing scene:

  • Kevin: Look, what do you mean just vandalism? What do you call this then? I mean, like slashing tyres, right, that's vandalism, but this to me is a threat.
  • Policeman: Do you have any reason to believe that there is somebody out to get you, sir?
  • Kevin: Oh yes, I do actually. Me and my wife.
  • Policeman: Mind giving me the details?
  • Kevin: Yeah, all right. Look, a couple of months ago, my wife inherited her mother's house, and just recently people have been putting pressure on her to sell, you know. They made her an offer way above what the house is worth.
  • Policeman: Why don't you sell?
  • Kevin: We don't want to. We want to live there.
  • Policeman: I see. Could we talk to your wife?
  • Kevin: Well, no. She's not here at the moment.
  • Policeman: Then perhaps we could drop back later, when she is home?
  • Kevin (after thinking for some moments and obviously changing his mind): Look, I know this sounds pretty stupid, but let's just forget it, shall we? I mean, there have been a lot of vandalism here recently... Well, I'm just a bit uptight about it.
  • Policeman: Yes, but what about these threats?
  • Kevin: Yeah, well, you know, it's probably just my imagination. I mean, somebody did make a fairly big offer on the house and my wife did not accept. Look, probably just been watching too much TV, you know.
  • Policeman: Well, if we catch them, we will let you know.
  • Kevin: Right, thanks a lot.

One of the background officers is again referred to as: Officer Knox"

  • Written by Sheila Sibley
  • Directed by Marcus Cole
  • Jock tries to call in a favour by pointing out to Vera how he helped her over Kerry Vincent's accusations. Vera keeps quiet during the staff meeting about what she knows about Jock. Judy apologises to Bea for accusing her of killing Sharon, and although she does not want to say at first and Doreen nods to her to keep quiet, she tells Bea who really did it. Even so, Bea won't commit herself immediately to helping Judy set up Jock. Vera tells Jock she didn't expose him only because she had no evidence to back her up: he offers her half the commission on the house sale in return for her silence. Bea and Judy confront Jock and Vera half overhears Judy accuse Jock of murder . Vera feels she must act now and takes the new accusation to Erica. Kerry has to show Helen the door in order to get any work done. Erica questions Doreen again, but she still sticks to her story that Jock had nothing to do with the harassment against her. Neverthless, Erica is sure Doreen is hiding something and tells Jock he will be reported to the Department and to the police. Mr Westmore arrives with a contract for Doreen to sign, but Paul asks to speak to Doreen first. He suggests to Doreen that she doesn't have to see the solicitor and offers to tell the solicitor himself. When he passes on the message to Mr Westmore that Doreen isn't selling, he adds that the business practices of Mr Westmore's client would be of interest to the police. Judy accuses Jock of murder in front of Meg. Meg tells Vera about Jock's lack of reaction to Judy's accusation, so Vera sets Meg straight about Jock's true nature. The police question Jock again, but he admits nothing, while attempting to throw back the suspicion for Sharon's death on Judy. However, Erica tells Jock he is suspended pending an internal inquiry. Jock calls Judy out of the rec room and warns her not to make any more accusations as the staff think she needs psychiatric help. When she slaps his face, he retaliates with a grossly detailed account of how he killed Sharon. David advises Kerry that changing her style will make her work harder to sell. Although she is annoyed with him to begin with, he manages to charm her into bed. Lizzie is disappointed when Marcia tells her she can't afford the local accommodation any longer and she and Josie are going back to the country. Lizzie offers Marcia financial help from her compensation, but she refuses. Bea suggests that Lizzie asks Doreen for a loan until her money comes through. Erica tells Judy she can't act on her evidence of Jock's guilt, as it is only hearsay and guesswork. Paul advises Doreen not to lend Lizzie money as she won't be able to pay Doreen back until her compensation comes through. He suggests instead that as Doreen's house will be empty that she lets Monica and Josie live there temporarily. When Paul visits Kerry he notices her pick up David's wallet from the floor and try to hide it. Kerry has to show it to him to prove that it's not a punter's wallet, so Paul finds out she has been seeing David and tells her he will have to tell the parole board. Bea sees the point of Judy's argument that to let Jock get away with murder means accepting that all their lives are of no value and can be snuffed out whenever any corrupt screw decides. Marcia refers to the trip to see Lizzie as a: business trip" while talking to Josie She is delighted when Paul finds her and Josie as they are about to leave to tell them about the accommodation Lizzie has arranged for them.

  • When Paul tells him about Lizzie's family, Kevin offers to help Marcia and Josie move into Doreen's house. Erica asks Meg to keep an eye on Judy as she's worried what Judy's reaction might be to the forthcoming inquest verdict on Sharon's death. Doreen is afraid that Kevin won't wait for her to be released. Kevin helps Marcia and Josie move in and offers to drive them back to the country to collect the rest of their things. Paul asks Erica to get permission for Doreen to visit Kevin for a day. Marcia warns Josie to be careful what she says in front of Kevin. Meg advises Paul that he should report Kerry's violation of her parole conditions, but he tells her he's willing to take the chance that no-one else will find out. Kerry finds out from an assistant at his gallery where David is having dinner with a client. Judy considers a hunger strike, but Bea tells her she'll only be drip-fed and the authorities will make sure she doesn't get any publicity. Kerry finds David is having dinner with an attractive woman and in a fit of jealousy throws a glass of wine over her. Leanne Bourke is brought to Wentworth on a two month sentence for petty larceny . David follows Kerry back to her flat and tries to calm her down, insisting that Robyn is a client and nothing more. After he leaves telling her to get down to some work, Kerry phones Helen and asks her to come round. Leanne objects to being put in a single cell. Bea comes to meet the newcomer and all the women are amazed to find that Noeline is not in prison too: Leanne says her mother has a job in a canteen. When Marcia leaves her alone with Kevin, Josie tells him about her uncle Bob Morgan, who left the orphanage at the same time as her mother. Helen and Kerry get drunk (stage drunk). Judy introduces herself to Leanne in the rec room and Jim notices, misinterpreting her interest. Kevin asks Paul how well he knows Lizzie's family as what he's been told by Josie doesn't quite add up. After lights out, Leanne pours nail varnish remover on her bed and sets it alight . When Jim and Vera rush to put out the fire, Leanne claims it was an accident. Vera and Jim argue about what to do: having ruled out solitary they decide to put Leanne in with Judy for the night. Leanne works out what's going on when Jim tells Judy to keep to her own side of the cell: she tells Judy she couldn't care less about her being lesbian as: the last dyke who tried it regretted it". Next day she asks Paul if she can be put in the garden, admitting that she'd prefer to be with Judy as most of the other women hate her because they knew her mother, adding engimatically that: dykes are all right if you're straight with them". Judy suggests a strike to force the authorities to hold an official enquiry into Sharon's death and Bea agrees but says they should be prepared for the screws to lock them in their cells and try to starve them into giving up. Vera phones Wentworth to pass on the verdict of Sharon's inquest: accidental death. Erica orders the evening paper to be censored so the women don't find out. Lorna follows Bea's instructions and hides food stolen from the kitchen in the women's cells. Doreen returns in the evening from her day on the outside with Kevin and asks to be allowed to see the other women to tell them what happened. She is also able to tell the women the inquest verdict just before they are to be locked up for the night. Bea decides to begin the protest immediately and leads the others in defying the officers and refusing to move from the rec room. Judy demands a fair inquiry into Sharon's death.
