EPISODE 64

Broadcast on Channel 5 (UK) 10 June 1997 Tues 4:40 a.m. Toni goes to hospital.

Meg ~ Elspeth Ballantyne
Lizzie ~ Sheila Florance
Bea ~ Val Lehman
Jim ~ Gerard Maguire
Doreen ~ Colette Mann
Greg ~ Barry Quin
Vera ~ Fiona Spence
Karen ~ Peita Toppano
Antonia McNally ~ Pat Bishop
Angela Jeffries ~ Jeanie Drynan
Roslyn Coulson ~ Sigrid Thornton
Martha Eaves ~ Kate Jason
Mum ~ Mary Ward
Judith-Anne ~ Kim Deacon
Ron Watkins ~ Norman Kaye
Kathleen Leach ~ Penelope Stewart
Terry Mansini ~ Burt Cooper
Officer Barry ~ Joy Westmore
Officer Maguire ~ Jean Cain
Dr Weissman ~ Bryon Williams

  • Written by Sheila Sibley
  • Directed by Leon Thau
  • When Dr Weissman enters reception he says hello to "Mrs Nichols, Miss Watson" meaning the receptionist (referred to as "Sally") and the officer present (who is the actress who usually plays Officer Barfield, and who is referred to as "Mary" by Meg).

As she is taken away to hospital, Toni tells her solicitor to "get" Roslyn. Officer Maguire warns Jim that the women won't take kindly to having their TV taken away. Roslyn is inducted into Wentworth: as Meg takes her to her cell, Lizzie meets them and tactlessly mentions the bets the women have placed on the result of Toni's trial. Greg visits Mum in hospital: he tries to persuade her not to discharge herself, which she wants to do to look after Judith-Anne. Bea reads the news of Toni's shooting and Lizzie identifies the new prisoner as the woman who shot her. Meg tells the women they had better get used to Jim as Governor as Erica may not be coming back. Dr Weissman arrives to evaluate Ros's mental state, and tells Jim he believes her to be completely sane. Mum's son-in-law Ron tells her he will help her even though his wife disapproves. Meg and Greg visit Judith-Anne and recommend Karen as a live-in nurse for her (and ultimately for Mum). Meg warns Jim that trouble is brewing among the women, but his solution is to order the women to report for exercise at 6:30 the following morning. Martha comes to the door of solitary to threaten Ros. The women disobey Vera's orders at the exercise period, but by agreement with the others Bea is the only one to do whatever she says , so she cannot be blamed as the ringleader. Angela puts pressure on Karen when Ron comes to visit to ask for her help, making her agree to move in with Judith-Anne. Even though Meg warns that it may be difficult to protect Ros, Jim is opposed to moving Ros into a cell with Doreen (given her "tendencies") so she is moved to share with Bea and Phyllis (who is not there but in sickbay). Martha arrives to threaten Ros and doesn't seem to care that Meg is able to hear what she says. Angela tries to convince Karen that her feeling of gratitude for Angela's kindness is just that: it does not mean that Karen is in love with her. Bea takes Ros under her wing and introduces her to Lizzie and Doreen. Vera tries to ingratiate herself with Jim by inviting him to revise the rosters over dinner, but he tells her he's moved back to live with his family. Meg and Joyce discuss Union action against the compulsory overtime, then notice that Bea, Ros and Martha are missing from the rec room. They hear a scream and find Martha unconscious in a corridor. Bea and Ros are taken to see Jim, and he sends Bea to solitary. Ros doesn't make it any easier for Bea by protesting at the unfairness, when Bea was only trying to help her. Jim warns Ros she'd better get used to the way things are in prison, as she's likely to be inside for a while - Toni McNally has died in hospital.

    EPISODE 65

Broadcast on Channel 5 (UK) 11 June 1997 Wed 4:40 a.m. The women are incensed when Bea is confined.

    Meg ~ Elspeth Ballantyne
    Lizzie ~ Sheila Florance
    Erica ~ Patsy King
    Bea ~ Val Lehman
    Jim ~ Gerard Maguire
    Doreen ~ Colette Mann
    Greg ~ Barry Quin
    Vera ~ Fiona Spence
    Karen ~ Peita Toppano
    Pat O'Connell ~ Monica Maughan
    Chrissie Latham ~ Amanda Muggleton
    Roslyn Coulson ~ Sigrid Thornton
    Angela Jeffries ~ Jeanie Drynan
    Kathleen Leach ~ Penny Stewart
    Mum ~ Mary Ward
    Judith-Anne ~ Kim Deacon
    Lorraine Watkins ~ Gabrielle Hartley
    Officer Barry ~ Joy Westmore
    Officer Powell ~ Judith McGrath
    Policeman ~ Michael Harvey

  • Written by John Upton
  • Directed by Philip East
  • Vera has to tell Officer Powell about the riot as it was before she arrived.

Vera says she will ask "Birdsworth, O'Connell and Flynn" to serve dinner in the cells, so this must be Flynn.

Joyce tells Vera about the Union meeting, and she promises to be there. Meg inadvertently lets Jim know about the meeting when he tries to criticise her for "gossiping" with Officer Barry, and he decides to attend to put his case. The other officers force Jim to back down and accept a compromise involving accepting that there will be no compulsory overtime and to make a request to the Department for more staff. However, the loss of privileges for the women is to stay. Vera is criticised for keeping her mouth shut at the meeting. Jim tells Vera about two prisoners to be transferred from Barnhurst, one of them being Chrissie Latham. Vera asks Jim if he has read the prisoner files properly, but when he says he has, she doesn't explain what the potential problem is. When Chrissie arrives , it is Meg who has to induct her (and to remember the past in a tacky montage of stills). Meg goes to seek out Vera in the laundry, but she says it was Jim's decision. He is appalled when faced with Meg's objections to working in the same prison as Chrissie and Meg demands he arrange for her immediate transfer out again. Colleen is also up in arms about Meg having to face Chrissie. Greg examines Chrissie and the other new prisoner Pat O'Connell. She tells Greg she is inside for aiding and abetting for not turning in her husband and son when they sought refuge after an armed holdup. Another Union meeting is called, the officers decide to strike and the women are locked in their cells. The officers present their demands to Jim, but he calls their bluff and tells them to go ahead. Meg rejects Greg's attempt to commiserate with her over Chrissie's presence in Wentworth. Ros talks to the new prisoner Pat, who recognises her from reading her story in the papers. Judith-Anne tells Karen she can't go home to her parents as her mother disapproves. Chrissie brags to her new cell mates Lizzie and Doreen about her sexual exploits with the male prisoners and even the (male) Governor at Barnhurst. Jim accuses Vera of trying to set him up by not telling him about Chrissie. Karen visits Lorraine at her home to tell her about Mum and Judith-Anne and try to convince her to help them both. Bea kicks up a fuss when her meal is delivered, and points out that regulations only allow her to be in solitary for two days without seeing the VJ. Karen goes to tell Angela about her meeting with Lorraine, and is told about Pat O'Connell's family. Angela reads a letter to Karen from Major Linwood of the Salvation Army listing names of missing persons and Karen recognises Doreen's name as someone whose mother is trying to contact her. Angela goes to Wentworth to see Pat but is refused admission by Jim, so she goes to Erica to ask a favour and go and see Doreen's mother to see how she would react to Doreen being in prison. Lorraine visits Mum in hospital, who insists that if she comes back to Lorraine's then Judith-Anne must come too. Bea is let out of solitary by Vera, and Vera lets slip her ambition to be the next Governor after Jim is gone.

Compare the small library in Bea's cell to the empty bookshelves in this shot of the rec room (though they are mysteriously full again later in the episode).

Bea meets Pat O'Connell, who is now sharing the cell with her and Ros. Meg accepts Jim's apology and the suggested compromise to keep Chrissie out of her way, but isn't convinced it will be enough to bring the other officers back to work. Erica goes to see Major Linwood of the Salvation Army about Doreen: he says the mother does not want Doreen to know she is trying to trace her but Erica manages to persuade him to give her the address to speak to to Doreen's mother in person. Ted Douglas warns Jim that if the officers do not return to work by midday the following day, the Department will have to intervene. Jim calls in to see Erica at home for advice on how to handle the strike: she confirms that she has indeed decided to resign though she hasn't told the Department yet. Bea leads a shouting protest when the women aren't let out in the morning for their shower. Jim tells Mr Douglas he cannot continue as Governor, though he would be happy to go back to being Deputy, though possibly not if Vera were to be made Governor. When he finds out Erica's decision to resign, Ted Douglas tries to frighten her by painting a grim picture of what life would be like at Wentworth under Vera's Governorship. Karen calls for a taxi to take Judith-Anne to hospital when her contractions become regular. Jim calls Vera to his office, but not for the reason she assumes: he tells her to put Bea on garden duty to keep her away from the other women, then drops the bombshell that Erica has changed her mind and will be returning to Wentworth next week. Erica visits Alice Hemmings, Doreen's mother , and finds that her main interest was to sort out the details of her will: she did not want to see Doreen and is appalled when she finds out that she is in prison. Meanwhile, Doreen is fretting about what she will do if she gets her parole. Greg brings Mum back from hospital and find the flat empty, but Judith-Anne had left a note to explain where she has gone. Erica tells Angela that Doreen may need the halfway house quite soon. Alice Hemmings follows up on Erica's suggestion that she should go and talk to Angela about the halfway house project, but only to offer financial help, as she doesn't feel able to see her again. When Alice nevertheless wants to know what Doreen is like, Angela says she has an idea of how she could visit. Judith-Anne gives birth to a boy, Daniel. Officer Barry tells the women that Bea has got her facts wrong: Erica has not resigned and will be back in a few days. Greg and Karen are unable to persuade Lorraine to see her daughter and new grandson, or have them in her house. Doreen is taken into the garden as she has a surprise visitor: it is her mother.

    EPISODE 67

    Officer Phillip ~ Lise Rodgers

  • Lizzie commends Ros's attempt at poetry by saying it "could have been written by Banjo Patterson".

Alice keeps her identity hidden by pretending to represent the halfway house and finds out more about Doreen's attitude to her. Doreen tells her she only has her father now, but he is probably dead. Meg realises Doreen is deliberately trying to shock her visitor with her hard faced attitude and tells her Mrs Hemmings is only trying to help her. Mum is annoyed with Karen for visiting Lorraine and her opinions about mothers who cut themselves off from their children form an oblique comment on Doreen's story, who fills in her mother about what happened to her while she was living with her father. Doreen says she accepts that her mother had her reasons to walk out on them, as she remembers her father getting drunk and beating her mother. Vera tells Alice not to bother with Doreen as she's a lost cause. Inside, she catches Chrissie putting on her makeup and orders her to scrub it off. Pat reminds Bea how much trouble Chrissie caused at Barnhurst, and Chrissie threatens to revenge herself for her scalping at Bea's hands. Alice tells Karen she feels it is too late to get to know Doreen and can only help by giving financial support to the halfway house. Karen is introduced to Alice and only succeeds in making her feel even more guilty for failing Doreen. After Alice has left, Karen turns on Angela for her heartlessness in encouraging Alice to visit Doreen incognito. Ros is still convinced that she won't be convicted of killing Toni McNally, but Bea is not so sure. Mum surprises Lorraine when she visits Judith-Anne in hospital, but Lorraine is cold towards her and leaves immediately. Karen goes to Wentworth while the women are at Sunday service to talk to Doreen about her release, and Pat comments sourly that no-one else is allowed visitors. Chrissie taunts Meg with her "dream" about a man called Bill and his boring wife, and when she doesn't react goes on to imply that it was Meg she wanted to kill, not her husband as she was having an affair with him. Meg only just manages to stop herself giving Chrissie a slap, and almost straight afterwards stops Bea and another prisoner (Mouse! ) from beating up Chrissie. At Ros' suggestion, the women send Chrissie to Coventry rather than do anything physical. Angela warns Karen against getting too emotionally involved if she is to work effectively at the half way house. Chrissie fails to get any acknowledgement from Lizzie and Doreen, even by strutting around without any pyjama bottoms on . Erica returns to work and tells Bea that if anything happens to Chrissie, she will be held personally responsible. She also makes it clear to the senior officers that she will not stand for the sort of disloyalty Jim suffered during the strike. Greg tells Vera that if she wants to make it up with Meg she'll have to do it without his help. Chrissie finds Doreen's poem to welcome Erica back and burns it in front of her . Erica sees Doreen in the garden and asks her what she is planning when she is released, but she is mainly afraid of the future. Lorraine is reconciled with Judith-Anne and tells Mum that they can all move back home. The women set up Chrissie for Vera to find her apparently ripping her sheets with a pair of scissors. Angela insists that Karen must move out and into the halfway house. A person whose face we don't see breaks into the medicine cabinet in the infirmary to steal medicine (though the block heeled slingbacks do give the game away a bit!)

  • Bea and the other women continue the psychological warfare against Chrissie and drop in on her in her cell next morning. Greg notices the theft from the medicine cabinet when he arrives at work but it is not anything obvious and he has to check the inventory to see what is missing. Meanwhile, Chrissie is throwing up in the shower block. Vera bodysearches the women for the missing medication. Lizzie overhears the Sister asking Greg if the ipecac syrup should be replaced. Vera finds Chrissie puking and takes her to the Governor, as Greg has told Erica that the missing medicine is used as an emetic. Lizzie consults a medical dictionary to find out the effects of the ipecac. Chrissie fingers Bea for poisoning her and as a result Erica sends Bea to solitary, ignoring her protestations of innocence. When Chrissie is taken ill again a few hours later, Lizzie follows her to the toilet block and points out to Meg that Bea cannot be responsible this time, as ipecac takes effect immediately. Meg responds that Lizzie herself would be the next most likely suspect. Greg confirms Lizzie's information and adds that it has such an unpleasant taste it would be difficult to disguise it in food or drink. Erica releases Bea from solitary and puts Chrissie to work in the garden to keep her away from the other women. Ros asks Lizzie and Doreen if it would be lagging to tell Erica who had been drugging Chrissie and when they don't she dashes off to see Erica. Angela visits Pat and tells her she has filed the divorce papers for her. Pat agrees with Angela that her children should be told about the divorce, especially her eldest son David, who is in Pentridge with his father. Ros tells Erica that Bea was not responsible and suggest a different interpretation of events based on her experience of an attention-seeking would-be suicide at her boarding school. When Chrissie calims to be feeling sick in the rec room, Lizzie questions why she wasn't taken ill immediately after the evening meal. Karen moves into the halfway house , and gets a routine visit from the police. Pat's mother and children come to visit her. Vera finds the empty medicine bottle in the garden near where Chrissie had been working, but Erica merely sends Chrissie back to the laundry after she refuses to explain why she took the medicine. Pat's mother tells her she can't look after the children any later than Christmas. Bea issues veiled threats to Chrissie and she asks to see the Governor. Chrissie tells Erica that she took the medicine herself as she has has been trying to make herself sick to try to hide the fact that she is pregnant.

  • Officer Barry tells Chrissie she had morning sickness herself "right up the fourth month", which is a strange way of putting it if she really did have the abortion she later claims to have had.

Erica tells Jim that a work party from the men's prison will be repairing the fence, so she hopes to keep them away from the women to avoid any further pregnancies. Chrissie is taken to see the doctor, though Vera refuses Pat permission to see him too. Erica tells Meg that Chrissie was transferred from Barnhurst for "playing around", but is confident Chrissie is trying to get isolated from the other women. Greg confirms that Chrissie is pregnant, and asks her what she plans to do: she says she wants an abortion. Erica calls for extra security during visits so that the news of Chrissie's pregnancy doesn't get leaked to the press before the Department can hold an enquiry. Karen visits Doreen again, and at the end of the interview gives her the message from Angela to Pat that both Greg and Erica have already refused to pass on - her son David will be in the work party. Jim warns Doreen that passing on the information would threaten her parole. Bea and Lizzie find Officer Barry guarding the door of Chrissie's cell and Bea issues a few veiled threats, knowing Chrissie is listening. After agonising for a while and overhearing Pat talking about her family to Ros, Doreen does tell Pat that David is coming to Wentworth. Greg wants to make sure that Chrissie doesn't make a hasty decision about having an abortion and arranges for her to work in maternity. Pat asks to be allowed to work in the garden, but Erica refuses. Chrissie has morning sickness, and Pat follows her to the shower block and realises she is pregnant when she overhears Chrissie's conversation with Officer Barry. Pat persuades Bea she has to lay off Chrissie, and Bea agrees if Pat can talk Chrissie into keeping the child. Jim catches Pat trying to sneak into maternity to talk to Chrissie. Bea remembers there is a window in maternity overlooking the garden. Doreen causes a diversion by pretending to have a "turn" (cue ridiculous mugging ) so that Bea can talk to Chrissie in the shower block. Chrissie lets Pat into maternity and stands guard, but she is called away to the Governor's office by Jim. Pat waves to David who just happens to be standing on a stepladder cutting the barbed wire at the top of the fence . He hops over the fence and runs to the maternity window to talk to her. She tells him she is only divorcing his father so she will get her parole and be home to see the kids for Christmas. Vera catches them together and tells Pat that she won't see her other children at Christmas as she's unlikely now to get her parole.
