  • Inspector Rouse gets the surviving police officer to confirm that they found Brian Lowe, but they did not reach Ann and Meg before the building blew up. Fran comes to the dining room rather the worse for wear, and Myra is forced to admit she bashed her. Reb look suitably smug at the women's horrified reaction: yet another sign that Myra is losing her following. Ambulances and fire engines arrive at the warehouse. Ann is found, having escaped through a window leaving Meg behind. Joyce is told that Bobbie will survive after having her stomach pumped and refuses to act on Joan's suggestion that Bobbie should be sent to solitary. After the other women shun Fran as a killer, Lou offers to sells drugs to her. Meg is found alive among the rubble of the warehouse . A doctor tells Ann that Meg has only suffered broken ribs and a ruptured spleen and is now in surgery. Inspector Rouse inadvertently lets Ann know that Phillip is dead - saying enigmatically that he assumed Lowe would have told her (by shouting upstairs while impaled on a spike, presumably?). Joan refuses to work an extra shift the following day and tells Joyce that's what she can expect if she's "playing Governor". Lou tells Reb that Camilla Wells is on holiday and suggests she will have to use the reporter who covered the Marathon to leak the news about the men in isolation. Meg has nightmares about squeaky electronic rats. Judy finds Fran stoned in the shower block. The women hear news about the explosion on a radio which is hastily confiscated by Officer Slattery. Myra puts futher nails in her coffin as top dog by snapping at the women when they suggest she should try to do something to help Bobbie. Joan visits Shane in the home and finds out he is to fostered by a family called the Taylors. Judy tells Reb (and not Myra) about Fran and asks her to investigate Lou's drug dealing. Lou tries to make a phone call to the press but fails to trick Offcer Slattery (who for once seems to be conscious during work hours). To her great surprise, the doctor tells Meg they were able to save her baby. Joyce agrees to put the men to work in the garden after Geoff points out they haven't had an exercise period. Ann tells the doctor that Meg is 3 months pregnant, and Ann asks to see her. Frank Burke points out to Geoff that he can afford to be relaxed about things as he doesn't have seven years left to serve, like him. Ann doesn't tell Meg that Phil is dead, especially when Meg asks Ann to tell him to come and see her. Joan asks Shane if he plans to see more of the Taylors. Bobbie returns to the women and offers to help Marlene look for cockroaches, as Tammy has found a prize specimen in the workshop. Reb plans to call the press about the male prisoners from the phone in the visitors' room with Lou's help. Shane goes skating (to a Duran Duran medley?) but Joan is rather more shaky on their feet. Len tells Joyce she is misguided to put the men to work in the garden, but she says she is waiting for Departmental approval. Joyce asks Ann's advice about how to handle Len's opposition to her leadership. Joan tells Shane she might not be seeing him again if the Taylors decide to foster him. Marlene announces that the cockroach races are on. Reb manages to pick the lock on the security gate, but Lou is caught by Officer Slattery and sent back to her cell. After making the phone call to the reporter, Reb finds she has been locked in the visitors' room and can't get back to her cell.

    ~~~
    As two people (Chris Carter and Gary Scally) have noticed independantly (and Martin commented ages ago in Digest 833), the background music when the women watch the TV in the rec room in an early scene seems to be a rather pathetic solo guitar version of "Tubular Bells". Just before Frances turns the TV off, we can see a tunnel... Rather like the opening of "The Exorcist" in fact, which famously used the same Mike Oldfield theme. Perhaps the text below which seems to read "1.6 metres high. 1.1 metres wide" indicates some advert alluding to "The Exorcist"?
    EPISODE 502
  • Pixie suggests idenitying the fastest cockroach with a dab of nail polish on its back. Reb optimistically attacks the security gate lock with her plastic comb. Judy pretends to want drugs to make Lou admit she's got them and warns her to stop dealing or she'll tell Myra. Joyce is phoned at home by the reporter Reb contacted and stupidly confirms to the press that men are held in Wentworth. Lou sneaks away before lights out and lets Reb out. Myra asks Len to be put on kitchen duty next day. Reb manages to get back to her cell just before Len locks it. Sam suggests to Judy that they could try to brighten up the rec room with some "art" from all the women: perhaps they could paint a mural. Bob Miller reports from outside Wentworth and Joyce comes out to tell him Mr Coleby will be arriving shortly . Myra warns Bobbie not to let her note writing to the men in isolation get out of hand. Under relentless pressure from Bob Miller, Mr Coleby is forced to make a statement and tells Joyce he holds her responsible for the leak to the press. Joyce assumes that it was Lou who contacted the press and puts her in solitary. Lou attacks Joyce physically and has to be pulled off by Officer Radcliffe. Frank taunts Matt for being a "pretty boy". Len gives the men working in the garden a hard time, until Geoff lets him know he remembers what happened to Kevin Wilson in Woodridge and that a second death might be a bit hard for him to explain. Pixie's father visits her and brings along his "friend" Susie to see her: she is affronted and tells them the relationship is "unnatural" and calls him an "adulterer". Myra catches Bobbie about to take some pills and makes her hand them over. While taking out some kitchen rubbish, Myra meets Geoff in the grounds but she assumes he is being fresh (he does after all refer to her as a "female") and gives him the cold shoulder. Mr Coleby visits Ann in hospital and appals her by his concern to get her back to work rather than for her - or Meg's - welfare. Meg asks to see Phil again, so Ann is forced to tell her that he is dead. Reb advises Myra to be even tougher on the women - and promises to stand by her. Joan accuses Len of only being interested in helping Bobbie as an ego trip, or is it perhaps for some other more sinster reason? Marlene's cockroach wins his first race. In a brawl between the male prisoners provoked by Frank Burke, Officer Bailey gets punched and knocked out by accident. The women watch Mr Coleby's interview on television. After finding out that most of the other women already knew that Lou was dealing drugs, Myra resigns as top dog and names Reb as her successor.
    EPISODE 503
  • Joan refers to the assault on Officer "Hagen" when it was actually Officer Bailey. Officer Hagen appears unhurt in the dining room not long afterwards.
    Joy Westmore also makes what is probably a slip the director decided not to re-run when she refers to a leak "that the men are being held at Woodridge". Well, at least she got the first letter right...
    Joyce is flustered to have to contend with Joan's report of the assault on an officer simultaneously with an urgent call from the Minister's office. Reb says the women shouldn't expect too much change now she's top dog, and says they will support one of Len and Joan to undermine the other one: they can choose who's to go first. Matt and Geoff implicitly lag on Frank and he is sent to solitary. Joyce visits Ann in hospital and fills her in on the Department's latest directives on the treatment of the male prisoners. Reb asks for Joan's backing of her as top dog and in return she will help her get rid of Len. Judy assures Myra she still wants to be friends with her. Frank gropes Pixie when she delivers his meal to solitary. Len not only refuses to take it seriously but tells him there is a gorgeous woman next door in solitary [It later appears he means Lou Kelly...] Myra hands over the press to Reb, but has to bite her tongue to stop intervening when Reb promises openly to deals drug to Bobbie. Sam is called to the Governor's office and Joyce tells her her mother and real name (Julie Ann Cameron) have been traced. The doctor tells Ann he is concerned for Meg's mental rather than physical well-being, as she doesn't seem to want to get better. Sam hands round the form with her real name: it has a ludicrously large font size so it can almost be read across the other side of the laundry. Meg refuses to talk to Ann and sends her away but Chris stays behind to try to shock her out of her self-pity with brutally "honest" criticism. Reb turns down Joan's suggestion to frame Len for drugs and plans to compromise Len with Lou. Geoff demands to see the Governor as he thinks it is no longer safe for them to work in the garden, as a sniper could pick them off. Ann goes straight back to work, taking Chris with her to try to talk to Bobbie again. Joyce is relieved to see Ann, but Joyce and Len are less delighted. Lou is not amused to find she is to be the bait for Len, but agrees when she finds out that Reb has taken over as top dog. Reb tells the women to stay away from Lou's cell during rec period but won't say why. Chris fails to re-assure Bobbie he is nothing like Jonathan Edmunds. Lou flirts with Len and hints she will be alone in her cell during the recreation period. Joan tries to plant a rumour with Ann about complaints of sexual harassment against Len. Judy helps Sam to write the letter to her mother. When the women congregate in the rec room to welcome Ann back, Reb drops a hint that Lou and Len are together in her cell. When Reb prematurely gloats about getting rid of Len, Myra points towards the door: Len has been shrewd enough not to have gone to Lou's cell and has swapped shifts with another officer. Marlene refuses Reb's free cocaine, so Reb gives her a doped biscuit. Many of the other women in the rec room giggle girlishly to indicate they have taken up Reb's offer. The cockroach races take place in the rec room. Myra is annoyed that Reb is giving drugs away, but Reb claims that it's an attempt to regulate the supply. Len visits Lou in her cell after lockup . Marlene is taken ill in the night with a reaction to the cocaine.
    EPISODE 504
    Broadcast on Channel 5 Sunday 18 April 1999 04:40 Under threat of Joan becoming governor, Ann finds she must agree to the men and women mixing. And Myra realises that Reb has duped them all.
Len is shown buttoning up after having sex with Lou: by the expression on her face after he leaves , we assume it was not willingly. Len and Pat Slattery get medical help for Marlene: Len suspects she has been poisoned. Reb has to quash the women's speculation about what happened to Marlene. Lou tells Reb she won't put up with being "mauled" by Len again. Marlene protests she didn't take anything when Ann tells her she had an allergic reaction to a drug. Joan is suspicious when Pat tells her Len took a long time to respond to the noise the night before. Joan deliberately humiliates Reb in front of the women for being made a fool of over the plot to get Len. When Joan pulls her to one side, Reb says that Len will visiting Lou regularly and to watch for him taking extra night shifts. Joan says next time she'll lock Len in the cell with Lou to make certain, and Reb adds she'll have to stop Lou who is going to ask for a transfer. Ann tells Joyce the Sarah Higgins murder enquiry will be dropped without anyone being charged. The Minister's secretary arrives to announce that the Department has given the go-ahead to fraternisation, despite Ann's objections. He openly threatens to appoint Joan if Ann resigns. Chris visits Meg and agrees to his suggestion to see a counsellor. All the officers are opposed to the idea of fraternisation, especially as there will be no extra staff to cope with it. Marlene tells Myra what the doctor thought was the cause of her illness. "Jane Doe" arrives at Wentworth, a woman who refuses to speak or give her name, with only a "prayer book" which she refuses to give up. The accompanying policewoman says they have tried every Middle Eastern "dialect" to try to communicate with her. Ann decides to move the new prisoner in with Pixie and ask Myra to have look after her. Meg seen by a social worker, who tries to help her decide what to do about her pregnancy and tells her she did have an abortion herself when she was made pregnant by a rape. Frank attacks Matt with a hoe while the men are working in the garden and Len sends them back indoors. Myra insists that Reb does something about Marlene and Reb allows her to think it was Lou who gave her the drugs. Joan surprises Len by speaking up against Lou's request for a cell change. Geoff challenges Frank about attacking Matt and punches him in the gut to ram the message home. Pixie asks to feed Matt in the infirmary as his injured hands mean he won't be able to eat his food. The new prisoner is brought to the dining room, and is too terrified to eat. Lou's racist taunts make her run from the rec room. Even though the women are initially quite keen to attend, Chris' group therapy session founders when he is unable to get them to talk openly, apart from to insult him. Myra starts to heavy Lou to tell her how she doped Marlene, but Lou sneers she should ask Reb how the drugs got in the first place. The men are brought to the rec room for the first joint recreation period: Myra cuts Geoff dead. Myra searches Reb's cell and finds for the drugs: Reb tells her she's no longer top dog and no-one will take any notice of her any more.
  • Frank uses the expression "point Percy" (at the porcelain) - I thought this was one of the fake slang terms that Barry Humphries invented for his character Barry McKenzie...
    Frank can't keep his hands to himself during the fraternisation in the rec room. Marlene introduces herself to Geoff, but it seems to be mainly in order to rope him into gambling on the cockroaches. Myra tells Judy it was Reb who doped Marlene: they agree there isn't much they can do about it for now. Geoff offers to build a little house for Aussie. Joan catches Geoff talking to Marlene and Bobbie in their cell and snidely comments he must be expecting his stay in Wentworth to be "one long sex romp". Frank finds "Jane" in her cell and tries to grope her: she fights back and Pixie helps her to send Frank away. Lou bumps into "Jane" on her way to the shower and she drops her book: when Lou tries to pick it up "Jane" attacks her and scratches her face. Reb makes a point of asking how Marlene is when she hears the women critcising her for giving Marlene the cocaine. Frank tells Geoff Lou has mentioned having drugs to sell. Reb apologises to Marlene to get her back on side. The women are sent back to their cells for a search, but nothing is found. Lou tells Reb she managed to get to the stash in time. Ann shows Joyce the photo in the paper of the unknown prisoner in the Despatch and interviews "Jane" about the attack on Lou. She has to suspend "Jane's" priveleges even though she still doesn't say a word or write down her name when asked. Reb tells Marlene they can hold another cockroach race: Lou wants to bet ten dollars on her own cockroach. Ann summons Reb to her office to tell her the search was for cocaine. Reb offers to do all she can to help find out who's responsible. Matt comes out of the infirmary and is introduced to the women in the rec room. Bobbie and Pixie both express their interest in getting to know him better. Pixie sees "Jane" come into the dining room and leave without eating, so she follows her with some food. "Jane" indicates with sign language that she is looking for her book in Lou's cell, so she and Pixie do a quick search. Pixie finds the book, and also Lou's cocaine: she is just trying to hide it again when Joan catches her and says she will have to take her to the Governor. Myra asks to borrow Bobbie's Walkman. Frank meets Lou in the shower block: she wants to know more about his claim to be able to get drugs in and he asks her to get some sugar and yeast to make booze. Pixie denies she was planting the drugs in Lou's cell as they weren't found in the cell search and is told she will have to face the VJ on possession charges. Lou tells Reb the drugs have gone. Reb tells Pixie not to interfere this time and says she will get her off this time. She goes to Ann and lags on Lou, after getting a promise that her information will be kept secret. She also uses the opportunity to hint strongly to Ann that Myra may be mentally ill and was responsible for the bashings a while back. Geoff offers to use his carpentry skills to make a frame for Sam's collage mural. Reb tells Lou she thinks that Pixie shopped her and to be careful what she says. Bobbie and Marlene fall out over their competition for Matt's attention. Ann sees Meg in hospital and finds out she still hasn't made up her mind whether to have an abortion. Myra invites Reb to her cell with a "proposal" and tapes her conversation where she indicates clearly what her motives are for being top dog. Pixie tells Bobbie and Marlene to to embarrass Matt, as he's shy. Joan walks into the rec room as the races begin and Marlene's cockroach goes under her collar. The races are fixed for Lou's cockroach to win, after Reb has laid bets on it too. Lou, Fran and Alice leave the rec room and go to beat up Pixie, but Lou decides to rough up "Jane" first. Myra plays the tape to the women especially the bit where Reb says "Bugger the women". "Jane" runs into the rec room and speaks for the first time: "Come. You must help quick. They are getting Pixie."
    [This was the final episode for 1984 in the original run in Australia. Possibly having pushed the boat out in the cliffhanger department for the landmark 500th episode, it was felt that the year end could be a little more low-key than usual]
