  • Written by Ray Kolle
  • Directed by Juliana Focht
  • Bea bails Lizzie out of trouble by having her give the women back their original bets and IOUs for the rest. Terry brings in a bottle of scotch for Margo. Her information - that Lizzie is running the book - doesn't impress Terry much, but Margo says if he doesn't give her the booze she'll never tell him anything else. He gives it to her. Meg and Nick have a cosy chat about his family. Although Meg doesn't notice, Nick is beginning to look at her with dewy eyes. Terry tells Vera that he got info from Margo, but doesn't tell her about the scotch. Vera is determined to put an end to Lizzie's book. Lizzie comes up with a plan for her IOUs. She'll bet the women she owes double or nothing that she can pick 6 out of 8 races. Judy has her tape recorder returned, but a cassette is missing. Margo tells Hazel that she has a bottle of scotch and she'll share if Hazel will side with her. Hazel tells Margo to go drink her scotch. Lizzie tells the women her plan; she'll pick one horse from each race and put the names in a tin. Bob has lunch with a Swedish contact, who just happens to be a Nordic babe . Lizzie won't let anyone see the names she's picked until after the races. Margo sees through her con and tries to tell the women, but they ignore her. Then Vera bursts into the laundry as the women are listening to the races. She discovers the IOUs on Doreen all signed by Lizzie. The women peek in the tin and see that Lizzie has picked 7 winners. Lizzie is marched into Erica's office, but Erica doesn't very much care. She "punishes" Lizzie by sending her to the maternity block to help out. Bea knows Margo must have lagged on Lizzie and she figures that Margo must have used the missing cassette to get something on Terry. She figures if Margo is going to blackmail a screw she'll be dangerous indeed. Nick brings Meg some lunch and asks if she and Bob have an "open" relationship. Meg blushes and chooses not to discuss such things. Terry and Vera argue over Lizzie and how the women should be treated. Terry storms out. Nick wants to wait up with Meg who is waiting for Bob. But when Bob comes home Nick gets jealous and goes to bed. Bob tells Meg straight away that his Swedish contact, Arna, is an attractive lady. They kiss as Nick seethes in the background. Margo and Doreen get kitchen duty. Margo tries to make up with Doreen by reminding her of the pantomime and the escape and offers her some scotch, but Doreen wants nothing to do with her. Doreen walks away and Margo pulls out a knife from one of the trays and pockets it. Doreen tells Bea about the scotch, who has already heard about it from Hazel. Bea confronts Terry with it, but he denies supplying it. She then tells him it was ridiculous to come down on Lizzie for running a book and he agrees. He says that Erica also agrees and that she should go talk to her about it. Bea does just that and is shocked to find that Erica would have nothing against a well-run, discreet book. Nick picks up Arna to deliver her to Bob for lunch. Arna is full of praise for Bob (Arna is evidently in need of some kind of vision correction). In the staff room, Vera apologizes to Terry and promises to try to change. He, too, is sorry and they hold hands. Erica walk in on them and thanks Terry for having Bea come talk to her. Bea visits Margo and tells her to leave Terry alone. Margo refuses. Bea is just about to bash her when Vera interrupts. She sends Bea on her way and advises Margo to watch her step. After she is left alone, Margo sharpens her knife. Bea warns Terry about Margo and then tells the women that they should seriously help Erica out with the Prisoners Needs Committee. Nick tells Meg all about Arna's thoughts on Bob. Terry confronts Margo and she tells him about the tape - or rather tapes, since she has made copies. She tells him that if he doesn't get her transferred she'll take the tape to Erica. He tells her she's made a serious mistake. Bob comes home drunk and drops a photo on the floor that Meg picks up , identifying Anna ("the one on the right", he helpfully adds). Meg is getting a bit concerned. Jim looks into Margo's cell - and finds her laying on the floor in a pool of blood .

  • Kirstie Grant's name is spelt "Kirsty" in the credits.

Thanks to Erika English for pointing out that the subtitlers of the Swedish version spelt Bev's name as "Carmella" (rather than Cavelli) when Erica dismisses her in this scene .

Jim runs for help. Margo comes to in the infirmary, but has no idea who hit her. Bob tells Meg that he has no interest in Arna and invites Meg to have lunch with them that afternoon before he takes Arna to the airport. Vera questions Margo about the attack. Margo decides it was Terry who did it and tells Vera about the tape and the scotch. Margo repeats the story to Erica, but Vera returns from a cell search claiming to have found nothing. Margo is not very surprised at this. Bea is off the hook, as she was in the rec room the entire time, but both Terry and Doreen walk in afterwards. Bea is pretty sure Terry is the basher. Jim comes right out and asks Terry. Terry is shocked that Jim would even ask. Meg has lunch with Bob and Arna. When Arna finds out that Meg is a parole officer she is very interested as many of her family are involved in Swedish prison reform. She asks to see Wentworth. Bob says it will be no problem. Terry visits Margo in the infirmary and asks her who attacked her. Margo says he did. Jim walk in on them and Margo claims he's threatening her. Jim doesn't believe her, but thinks Terry was awfully stupid to be alone with her. Judy tells Bea that all her cassette tapes have gone missing. Erica decides that Margo cannot be returned to the other women so she must be put into isolation. Margo's none too thrilled with this. Doreen is crook and runs to the toilet every few minutes. Judy's tapes have been returned - obviously played - and Hazel's have disappeared. Bea figures the screws are trying to find the incriminating tape and wants to know who bashed Margo. Doreen takes off for the loo again. Erica asks Jim if he could escort a guest around the prison. Jim reminds her he has the afternoon off. Arna arrives. Jim gives up his afternoon. The women are impressed by Arna and her stories of Swedish prisons. Bea sees a lot of potential for the Prisoners Needs Committee. Vera delivers Margo's meal to her in isolation. Margo tells Vera that when she gets out she'll make sure Terry pays. Vera retorts that they'll just have to make sure she never gets out. Terry confesses to Jim about the bottle of scotch. Jim decides not to report it but asks Terry to please stop trying to cultivate prisoners. He then finds Vera listening to cassette tapes. Vera says that the integrity of prison officers must be protected. Jim says that surely Terry wasn't stupid enough to get himself recorded... "was he?" The looks on Vera and Terry's faces answer his question. Bob has to work late so Nick whips up a candlelight dinner. Meg is a little uncomfortable. Nick then gives her an expensive gift. Meg says he has the wrong idea about her, that she thinks of him as a son. Nick says she led him on, upsets the dinner table and runs out. Bea is roaming the corridors searching for Doreen. She finds Doreen, very drunk and holding a near empty bottle of scotch, hollering for Lizzie at the gates of the maternity block . She ushers Doreen back to her cell and asks her for the tape. Doreen gives it to her. As Doreen rambles on about bashing Margo, Bea looks at the cassette and smiles. Meg is worried about Nick, if he gets into trouble his parole will be revoked and she won't be able to help him. Meanwhile, Nick is thrown out of a bar for disorderly conduct. He picks up a bottle and hurls it through the window .

  • Thanks to Jeff for pointing out a case of wall trouble. Not the famed wobbliness, but the distinctly hollow plasterboard sound when the women put their hands on the wall during the cell search.

Vera refers to Bev as "Cavelli" .

Judy asks Bea what she intends to do with the cassette, but Bea is not yet sure. Meg gets to Nick as he is being escorted to prison. She says how sorry she is for the misunderstanding. A very bitter Nick tells her he could care less. Erica visits her mother in the country (in a rather grand house with Art Deco style railings ). Her mother, Florence, is just like Vera's mum except better groomed and wealthy. Jim, as Acting Governor, has all of the women's' recorders and tapes confiscated and says that since they have proven to be a security risk they will no longer be allowed. He also orders a cell search for the incriminating tape. They do not find it - Bea has it taped behind the glass of her over-sink cabinet. Erica and her mother argue. Florence has a bad spell. As Erica runs out of the room to get help, Florence peeks after her. Erica is outraged when Gwen, her mother's companion, tells her the "fainting spell" was just Florence's way of ending an unpleasant conversation. Bea decides it is as good a time as any to organize the Prisoners Needs Committee and takes a group of women to meet with Jim about the return of the tapes and recorders. Jim is very abrupt with them and says no. Meanwhile in the staff room, Terry, Vera and Jim are busy listening to hard rock tapes in an effort to find Margo's. Erica has dinner with Meg and Bob (who seem to have got over Nick quite easily) and complains about her mother. While Terry is conducting late night rounds he finds Bea waiting for him in her cell. She hands him over the tape. He is wary of taking it. Bea says that he's a decent screw and as long as he's prepared to do a favour in return, she's happy to return it. As soon as he departs, Bea pulls a copy from her pyjama pocket. Terry informs Vera that Bea has handed over the tape, but Vera is certain there's a copy. Erica visits her mother again, this time with her brother, James. She is determined to have a decent conversation with her mother and feels that James' presence will help since she prefers him. The conversation goes typically, ending with Erica snapping and Florence moaning that she'll die soon. Doreen bounces into the laundry waving her now empty bottle of scotch. Bea snatches it away and tells Judy to dispose of it in the wastebasket. Vera catches Judy doing this. The laundry gets pretty quiet for a moment. Vera tells Stokes to empty the garbage outside and tells the women to "get back to work". Erica returns to work and, upon finding out about the confiscated tapes, orders everything returned to the women. Bea thinks Terry is responsible for this until she finds out that it was Erica. She then tells Erica about Jim's attitude to her Prisoners Needs Committee. Erica reprimands Jim severely and then scolds Terry as well for compromising himself. Bea then reminds Terry that he owes her a favour and also lets on that she does, indeed, have a copy (or even copies). Erica tries phoning her mother. Florence attempts to answer, but collapses in the process. Terry meets Vera in the staff room and says he's resigning. He also tells her that he has to move out, before the scandal increases and gets her in trouble as well. He walks away, leaving Vera to cry by herself.

  • Jim finds Vera sobbing in the rec room. She asks to be excused for the afternoon and Jim agrees. The family doctor phones Erica and informs her that her mother has collapsed and is in hospital awaiting an operation. She has had a cerebral thrombosis and Erica must come immediately. Vera catches Terry at home and persuades him not to move out just yet - that they must have one last attempt to get the tape. Jim confronts Bea and says that Terry is about to resign and reminds her that a decent officer is very likely to be replaced by a Jock Stewart. Bea feigns ignorance. Erica and James arrive at the hospital. They visit their mother before she goes into surgery. Florence keeps repeating that she's sorry. "Sorry for what", Erica asks? Florence says to ask the doctor... and with those enigmatic words she is wheeled away. Erica does ask the doctor, and he tells them that Florence had a boy before either of them and that this child died as the result of an accidental fall. But Florence blamed herself and when Erica and James were born she felt she couldn't be trusted with them That's why she had been such a distant mother. Erica wishes she could have had a long talk with her mother. Too late. The surgeon comes in and informs them that their mother did not make it through the operation. Terry makes one last attempt to get the cassette from Bea. When she refuses he says that he's off to the Governor's to resign and that she is welcome to accompany him. Bea stops him and gives in. She'll hand over the duplicate (And there is only one) right after lunch. After lunch, however, Bea finds her cell ransacked and the tape gone. Terry finds Vera in the rec room with stuff taken from Bea's cell (mostly food items) He yells at Vera and says that Smith was going to return the tape of her own accord. Vera starts to cry and Terry quickly apologizes. He asks Vera if she found the tape and she says she hasn't. Terry then notices a container of sugar. He dumps out onto a tray and - sure enough - the tape is concealed therein. He and Vera hug joyously. He then returns the items nice and neatly to Bea's cell, which pleases Bea. All are happy - ah, but will it last? A rather emotionally disoriented Erica comes to work, but Jim convinces her to go home. Michelle Janice Parks is brought in on remand for breaking and entering. She stands accused of stealing $8,000 from her former employer. She is attractive, which does not go unnoticed by Jim. She vehemently proclaims her innocence. Vera smirks. Michelle tells Bea and Judy that she was given the sack by her boss because she refused to work late because it interfered with her athletic training. When the office was robbed a week later, apparently by an insider, she was the natural suspect. Michelle claims she was out running at the time of the robbery, but her only witness was an unknown elderly lady whom the police cannot locate. Michelle is visited later that day by Henry Lawrence, her coach. Miss Parks, it would seem, is a runner with Olympic potential. This piques Jim's interest further. Jim not only agrees to let Michelle run on the grounds, but to pace her as well. Vera sees them running. She asks Jim afterwards if he would help, say, Smith or Bryant to run. Michelle claims the grounds are too small for her to properly run in. Jim allows her to run along the perimeter fence. She leaves him in her dust. Jim becomes nervous when he can't find her, but discovers her waiting for him back at the gate. She has done the mile in five minutes. Jim is properly impressed. Meanwhile, Judy receives a visitor. A pretty young thing named Laura Young. Judy asks the girl what she wants. Laura says simply, "I think you could be my mother."

  • Judy is stunned at meeting Lori and asks how she found her. Lori explains that her adoptive parents, the Youngs, were afraid that Judy was going to try and contact her during her escape so they told Lori everything. Judy asks her to return the next day after she's had a chance to compose herself. Michelle is entertaining the women with her story of leaving Jim in her dust, when Judy walks in. Bea and Doreen want to know all about her visitor (assuming it was a professional do-gooder) but the Jude is evasive. Judy then runs into Erica in the hall and asks her if she may have a special visit the next day. Erica wants to know specfically why and Judy refuses to be specific so Erica just walks away. Discovering that Terry was the supervising officer at the meeting, Erica asks him why Judy should need another visit. Terry informs her that the visitor was Judy's daughter. Jim asks Meg if she can recommend anyone from Legal Aid to help Michelle. Erica tells Judy that she may have her special visit. When Lori comes the next day for her visit she encounters Jim who knows nothing of it. She tells him who she is and Jim asks her if she's sure she means Judy Bryant. He verifies the meeting with Erica and then, looking pretty amused, he escorts Lori to the garden. Lori asks Judy why she gave her up for adoption but Judy is vague. Judy does tell her that she got herself put into prison to protect a "friend". Lori finds that very touching. While they are talking, Tony Morton from Legal Aid arrives to see Michelle. Jim then tells Lori that her time is up. When she asks if she can return the next day, Jim says that that's impossible and that she'll have to wait til the next week. Lori is concerned because she didn't bring much money, but she promises her Mum that she won't leave without seeing her again. Michelle meets with Tony, who tells her that her prospects are grim. No one can locate this "old lady" who saw her training in the park. Michelle then asks Jim if he can arrange for Henry to visit her. Hazel has seen Judy in the garden with Lori and promptly tells Bea and the other about Judy's pretty visitor. When Judy comes into the dining room, everyone starts making naughty innuendoes. Judy gets very upset and storms out. Doreen goes and apologizes. Judy tells Doreen that Lori is her old friend, Pauline's, daughter. Lori walks into a jewelry store, puts several expensive rings on her fingers, smiles and darts out. She allows herself to be easily caught. At breakfast, Judy is shocked when Vera escorts Lori into the room. Vera asks Judy if Lori is a friend - "That wouldn't be surprising, they all end up in here." In the laundry, Judy screams at a trembling extra and throws sheets at her. Bea calms her down and Judy runs after Jim to ask if she can testify at Lori's hearing. Jim says that Lori has already left for it. Henry visits Michelle who complains about her inability to properly train (Though she makes sure to flash Jim a quick smile for his help) Henry asks if he could come into Wentworth to train her. Jim doubts it as it would surely be viewed as preferential treatment. Henry then volunteers to give Keep-Fit classes for the women. Jim thinks this is a good idea. Meg visits Erica who rambles on about her mother until Meg silences her with a dinner invitation. Jim and Henry then enter to present the Keep-Fit program. Erica glady agrees. Judy has herself transfered to the garden and immediately tries to climb the fence (Though she can't lift herself very high). As Vera and Terry drag her inside she goes on about testifying for Lori. Erica understands Judy's panic and, much to Vera's horror, merely has Judy confined to her cell. Judy then asks if Lori can share with her. Much to Vera's continued horror, Erica agrees. Jim tells the women about the Keep-fit program and tells them they could do with one. Bea is not interested. When Jim leaves, Michelle tells Bea the class is merely a way of allowing her to talk to her coach in private. Bea agrees to go along with it. Vera tells Doreen that she's being moved back in with Smith. As Doreen collects her things, Vera tells her that Judy is making way for her pretty young friend. Doreen asks Judy if this is true. Judy says it is, but not the way she thinks. Doreen is deeply hurt and runs out. Lori returns having received a deferred sentence pending a parole officer's report. Judy tells Lori not to tell the other women she is her daughter. Lori doesn't understand why, but Judy is adamant (She thinks the women will hate her for willingly giving up her child). Vera asks Meg for dinner, but Meg says she's already invited Erica over. She then invites Vera and Terry as well. The Keep-Fit class begins in the garden. Michelle gets Henry aside and tell him to find the old lady. He says he's been trying. Michelle says he doesn't understand - she wants him to find any old lady and pay her to lie. Henry is reluctant to commit perjury. Michelle says that she's innocent, and she'll do anything - legal or otherwise - to prove it.
