  • Doreen's reference to "that freak, Ferguson" is the first hint of her future nickname.

The address of the halfway house is "32 Worthington Street" according to Meg. Any relation to a certain scriptwriter and storyliner?

Bea is already in Erica's office facing the third degree about the article. She tells Erica that one of the women saw Steve alone on the night he was supposed to have raped Chrissie. Chrissie is brought in: she denies that the rape took place. Bea is incredulous. Erica tells Bea she will have to tell the reporters who are waiting to speak to her that there will be no need for an "investigation" into something that never happened: they are disgusted that they will have to print a retraction. Joan is supervising the meeting and points out that the officers union will also want an apology. Bea threatens to kill Chrissie if she crosses her again. Joan corners Doreen to tell her she has to take over running the book, probably picking in on her as she knows that Doreen only has seven weeks left to serve. Bea wants to know what Joan was talking to her about and Doreen pretends that Joan was making sexual advances to her. Joan goes to see Brenda to ask her to take Elizabeth to visit Chrissie, as this might increase Brenda's chances of getting custody. Judy tells Hannah she's not after her body and is only trying to prevent her falling victim to Joan. Joan hints to Wendy that Steve might be guilty of associating with Chrissie, and points out it wouldn't be the first time. Doreen puts the idea of starting up the book again to Bea as if it were her own idea, and gets Bea's permission. Hannah is appalled by Joan's suggestion that they "console each other" when Judy is released. Brenda brings Elizabeth to see Chrissie, but lets her know how little she likes coming to prison. Wendy confronts Steve about Sandy Edwards and breaks off their relationship. Bea offers to get the women to help the halfway house by making soft toys to sell and says she write about it in her next column. Hannah explains to Chrissie why she held up her father's business and offers to have Duncan Campbell bring Elizabeth to see her in place of Brenda and as contact for their escape: Chrissie suggests they use Judy's release to pass a letter to him. Bea is told her newspaper column has been cancelled. Judy goes to see the premises for the halfway house and Wally tags along. Lizzie loses money from her knickers: Bea conspires with her in a trap to catch the thief. Susie has had enough at work and resigns from her job when her boss threatens to sack her. Hannah convinces Judy to get a letter out of Wentworth for her by pretending it's about getting money to her sick mother. Doreen makes a presentation to Judy as she leaves: Lizzie excuses herself to prepare inked notes for the peter thief. Joan puts on the leather gloves to give Judy a body search in reception as she leaves and finds the letter , but Judy threatens to ruin Joan's chances with Hannah if she has to stay inside. Hannah and Chrissie watch Judy leave, and comment that the letter must have got through.

  • Wally cheers Judy up by bringing some pots for her to sell in the halfway house shop. Chrissie tries to steal the money Lizzie hid in Doreen's shoe and gets the ink all over her hands and uniform. When Judy and Wally visit the hostel to see Susie, Mrs Beamish tells them that Susie has left. Susie turns up at Donna's asking to stay: for a moment Donna can't remember where she's met Susie before. Chrissie is caught trying to clean the ink off her hands and gets a bashing from Bea, Lil and Ronnie . Joan waits outside in the corridor until they have finished, then offers Chrissie her "protection", in return for a cut from the money Chrissie stole from the women. When Bea tells Chrissie that the bashing wasn't the end of it, and the women want their women back, Chrissie tries to claim that Joan took it all. This cuts no ice with Bea, who says she'll just have to come up with some other way to find the money. Mrs Beamish phones Meg to tell her that Susie has left both her lodgings and her job. Wally persuades Judy that she ought to let Lori know about her recent stay in Wentworth. Meg agrees with Colleen that they will keep quiet about it until Susie's parole expires in 72 hours. Duncan Campbell visits Brenda to take Elizabeth to visit Chrissie: she agrees on the condition that she can come as far as the gates with him. Judy gets support from a woman living opposite the halfway house. Duncan Campbell makes a preliminary arrangement with Chrissie for Hannah's escape in return for $2,000 to be hidden on Elizabeth on a future visit. Det. Sgt. Melville interviews Hannah to try to find out where the money is, but she refuses to help. Hannah talks to Chrissie about her mother. Susie phones Meg at work, and is given the address of the halfway house. Donna introduces Susie to her pimp Des, who deals drugs to Donna after Susie has gone. Joan tells Lizzie to spread the word that Chrissie is not to be touched and gives her some booze. Bea tries to apologise to Steve for the article, but when she is rebuffed, she is all fired up to take it out on Chrissie. Lizzie manages to persuade her that isn't a good idea. Joan tells Doreen to leave her cut of the take behind a fire extinguisher. Donna finds out that Susie is a virgin. Doreen borrows the money for Joan from Lizzie, who tells Bea. Bea watches Doreen hide the money, takes it and gives it back to her in the rec room. Lizzie admits she is also taking a payoff from Joan. Bea tells Doreen to put the money back until she can work out what to do about Joan. Donna lends Susie a dress for an interview: Des proposes another "job" Susie is qualified for .

    EPISODE 293

Broadcast on Channel 5 Sunday 14 June 1998 04:40 Susie shows her naivety over Donna's relationship with Des, and Bea decides to fight back against Joan - with or without Hannah's help.

  • Having gone to the trouble of finding a belly dancer for the scenes in the dodgy nightclub , the least they could have done was to have given the poor woman a credit!

Dave Worthington is also a longtime storyliner - hence perhaps the references to Myra's bookshop and to Jock Stewart.

Bea checks with Doreen that Joan has collected the money: they decide to set her up with Hannah, who at first will not co-operate with the plan. Chrissie persuades Hannah it will make a perfect cover for their escape attempt. Donna locks Susie out of the flat while she shoots up. Bea arranges for the other women to lend Hannah "gifts" from Joan for Colleen to discover. Chrissie tells Hannah about her family life: her mother died soon after they emigrated to Australia. Hannah tells Chrissie that she got the money out by packing it in a carton addressed to her mother. Meg comes to help with the halfway house, and tells Judy that the previous one had to be closed due its failure to get Government assistance after it ran out of money. Duncan brings the money to Chrissie hidden in a soft toy, and tells her she must arrange for Hannah's escape or he will hurt Elizabeth: Chrissie outlines her plan to get Hannah out via the laundry van. Susie fails an interview at a French restaurant. Bea and Doreen deliver the gifts they have collected to Hannah. Judy comes to Wentworth to ask for the women's help in making soft toys: Bea asks her to smuggle in a piece of jewellery that a "dyke" might give to her girlfriend. Judy refuses and tells Bea she can't put her parole and the halfway house in jeopardy. Bea tells her she is a hypocrite who has forgotten her mates as soon as she gets outside the gates. Des persuades Donna to line up Susie with a client who's "kinky" for virgins. Bea suggests to Hannah that they find a way of letting Joan think she's calling the shots: Hannah makes Joan override Bea's order to have Lizzie take the laundry truck and put Hannah in her place. The women let Colleen overhear a jealous discussion about Hannah's presents: Colleen takes the matter up with Steve and Joan. Meg asks Lizzie why Hannah has the frame which held Sid's photo, which now holds a snapshot of an ambiguously androgynous woman. Donna invites Susie out on a double date with Des and Len. Joan visits Hannah before lights out to find out what is going on, and puts on her black gloves before kinkily stroking Hannah's face and hair : Chrissie interrupts them. Meg and Colleen suspect that it is Steve rather than Joan who is taking sexual advantage of the prisoners, even when Joan asks for Chrissie to be transferred to another cell. Len pays Des in advance for Susie, who wakes up next morning to find an extra tip under her pillow. Joan challenges Chrissie about what's going on between her and Hannah, and accuses Chrissie of stealing the goods she's seen in Hannah's cell. This makes Chrissie tell Joan all the details of Bea's plan to frame her as Hannah's seducer.

Susie is distraught and guilty at being trapped into being paid for sex: Donna comforts her and tries to make her take some pills, but Susie refuses, saying she doesn't want to take drugs. Hannah and Chrissie return to their cell to find Joan waiting for them with her leather gloves at the ready. Joan throws Chrissie out of the cell to confront Hannah and smash her supposed "gifts" and wreck the cell. Bea notices Hannah is missing from the laundry, though Chrissie is sitting at the sewing machine trying to look unobtrusive, and sends Doreen to help her. Hannah arrives in the laundry unharmed, but Joan has made her clean up the cell and throw all the gifts away. Bea tells Chrissie she will have to stick to Hannah from now on to make sure that Joan can't get to her. Des puts pressure on Donna to make Susie work for him by threatening to cut off her drugs supply until she does. Susie visits Judy at the halfway house and says she'd like to live there. When Judy finds out who Susie is staying with (and that she seems to have acquired $100 from somewhere) she tells Susie to collect her belongings from Donna's place and come to stay in the halfway house even before it's officially open . Duncan makes another visit to Wentworth without Elizabeth to finalise arrangements with Chrissie. Joan makes another officer search Hannah after she has planted contraband on her so she can have Hannah sent to solitary. Bea sees this and realises that Joan must have been told that the women are trying to set her up for seducing Hannah. Susie returns to find Donna beaten up by Des after he thinks she has let Susie move out. Donna uses this to pressurise Susie to go on the game to make up for the income she will lose with her face marked with bruises. Joan's "discovery" of contraband on Hannah only confirms Colleen's suspicion that it is Steve who is dealing with the women. Bea wants to know what Chrissie has done to get so many visits: Colleen walks into the rec room just as she is pulling Chrissie's hair and sends Bea to solitary. Susie is propositioned on the street by a young man who thinks she's a prostitute. When Susie fails to turn up at the halfway house as she promised, Meg and Judy set out to find Jackie as a first step to tracing Susie. Susie offers to earn the money for Donna through prostitution. Colleen asks Chrissie the reason for her dispute with Bea, asking Chrissie to name the officer who is dealing with Hannah. Hannah shouts to Bea in the next cell in solitary to find out how long they are likely to be held there: Bea replies that it may be a couple of days. Meanwhile, the escape plan proceeds: the laundry van is hijacked en route for Wentworth and a new driver is substituted. Joan lets herself into Hannah's cell in solitary to put more pressure on her. Chrissie gets onto the roof above the loading bay and lowers herself with a rope made of knotted sheets onto the roof of the laundry van . Hannah hears an officer approaching solitary and screams and rips her blouse open to compromise Joan in front of Colleen. Chrissie escapes, even though Steve notices the rope and raises the alarm. When the van halts at the rendezvous point, Chrissie clambers down from the roof and attempts to make a getaway, but she is caught. Lizzie tells Bea that Hannah has escaped when she brings her meal to solitary. Hannah is furious when she finds out. She shouts to Bea in the next solitary cell that she lied to Chrissie about where the money is hidden. She fears that Chrissie will lead the gang to her mother's house and that they will kill her before they accept that she doesn't know where the money is.

Chrissie is taken to a deserted warehouse to meet Duncan Campbell, who is very displeased when it turns out to be Chrissie rather than Hannah. She tells him Hannah couldn't get away so she took her place, and to stop him turning her over to the police, she tells him she knows where the money is hidden. Bea advises Hannah to inform the police to protect her mother, and Hannah yells to be let out of solitary to see the Governor. Duncan drives Chrissie to Brenda's: his associates snatch Elizabeth at gunpoint, but she is put in the second car, not with Chrissie, and they drive on to Hannah's mother's house. Hannah tells the police where the gang will be going, but refuses to say where the money really is. Brenda phones the police to report the kidnapping of Elizabeth. Duncan sends Chrissie and the two men inside the house to find the money, while he waits in the car with Elizabeth. The men ransack the place while Chrissie urges Mrs Simpson to tell them where the money is . Duncan spots the police arriving and drives off. The police knock on the door, provoking Frank to shoot at them. Chrissie tries to make a break for it when she finds out that Duncan has left with Elizabeth. Benny and Frank also decide to try to get out, using Mrs Simpson as cover, but just at that moment Duncan Campbell phones the house and offers them money to give themselves up and not mention his name. Hannah still refuses to tell Det. Sgt. Park who else was involved in the robbery, even when he threatens to charge her in connection with Elizabeth's abduction. Erica tells Colleen she can't do anything about Joan putting sexual pressure on Hannah if neither she nor Hannah will make an official complaint. However, when Chrissie is brought back to Wentworth Erica refuses to let Joan supervise her shower. Susie offers to work for Des. Joan searches Chrissie's clothes, finds the money hidden in her bra and puts it back. The women in the laundry give Chrissie the cold shoulder. Joan tells Erica she is being set up over the sexual harassment accusation, but Colleen obviously doesn't believe her. Chrissie is on cleaning duty and sneaks up to solitary to speak to Hannah about Duncan, but Steve catches her and sends her away. Susie goes to work on the streets. Judy brings materials for the women to make the soft toys, and drops a hint to Colleen about Joan's crush on Hannah. Des threatens not to supply Donna with any more drugs unless she will get Susie hooked too. Susie gives Donna the money she's earned and Donna tries again to give her pills . Hannah refuses to believe Chrissie's story that Duncan will harm Elizabeth and refuses to tell her where the money is. Joan visits Lizzie in the night (saying she thought she "might be a bit lonely with Lorna in hospital") and gives her a bottle of whisky in return for information about the illegal still . Hannah decides she will give the money back to her father's estate rather than let Duncan have it.
