  • The role of Samantha is miscredited to "Nadine Wells" for this and the next episode.

Mark Cox suggests that the new background prisoner who appears in two scenes in this episode is an old familiar face.

It is Don Baxter, who had got the tape through Brenda, and he demands $10,000 in payment for the tape, giving Joan 48 hours to come up with the money. Minnie tells the women she won't give up trying to find a way to fix Joan. Sonia approaches Phyllis to sell the drugs for her. Joan is turned down for a bank loan, but is told a finance company might be be able to help - at a much higher rate of interest. Minnie notices that Mary is missing. Pixie remembers she last saw her talking to David Bridges. Paul meets his lawyer, Samantha Russell. Joan accuses Sonia of involvement with the blackmail attempt. Wally gives evidence at Judy's trial (featuring yet another six person jury ): he has to admit that Judy told him she gave Hazel an overdose. Her solicitor calls Judy to the stand herself to tell in her own words the events that led up to Hazel's death. The women cover for Mary when Joan notices she isn't in the laundry. This makes the women realise that Mary must have escaped and Phyllis promptly starts a book on whether she'll get away with it. The prosecutor tricks Judy into admitting that she wanted Hazel dead. Sonia demands a cut from Brenda of whatever Joan pays. Terry tells Minnie that Billy has been picked up after a tip-off by a prison officer: Minnie assumes it was Joan. Randi returns to Wentworth on a three week sentence. Minnie plots to get Joan: Frances asks to be in on it. Joan catches Bobbie rolling a joint and also catches Phyllis moving dope in the laundry skip: she finds out Sonia is behind the racket. Meg confronts Randi when she finds out she is back inside, but Randi tells her she will keep her promise to get revenge on Meg for ruining her chances with Marty. Phyllis and Bobbie ask to join the plot against Joan. Minnie agrees but confiscates Bobbie's Walkman just in case. Lizzie reports a mysterious conversation she had with David that seems to imply he knows something about Mary's escape. Minnie keeps Sonia and Brenda away from a meeting of the conspirators by sending Pixie to them to buy dope, but Sonia and Brenda realise this is a fairly strange thing for Pixie to be doing and make her smoke it straight away. Minnie loses control of the meeting: Phyllis and Frances take over and decide Joan must be killed. Pixie's stoned behaviour distracts David: she even drags him into her cell to show him her wedding albums. Joan is knocked out patrolling the corridor: Bobbie is hurt in the struggle and goes back to her cell, where Minnie works out from her what is happening. Minnie is about to dash off to stop the women, but Bobbie tells her she is already too late. The women tie a noose around Joan's neck and string her up in the shower block .

    Mr Walsh ~ Raymond Rich

  • Written by Ian Smith

  • Apart from the mistake over the actress playing Samantha, these credits are full of inconsistencies: "Francis"; Lionel "Fellows" played by Will "Duemer"; Det. Insp "Thorn" played by Peter "Aanenson". I suspect that Ian "McKleish" is also a misspelling.

Pixie feels sick and David helps her to the toilet, where they find Joan: he holds her up to take the weight off the rope and tells Pixie to use the knife in his top pocket (!) to cut her down. Brenda is furious to find that Joan may have been killed, and a major source of income cut off. Minnie organises an alibi for the women by hustling them off to the rec room. Samantha impresses Ann and Paul with her individual approach to the law. Ann is called to the prison and the women start to concoct their alibis for her. Colleen confirms that the sheets came from Mary's cell and that she is missing. Ann tells the women that Joan is still alive, which makes one or two of them look a little nervous. Lizzie suspects that David helped Mary to escape after she notices that David pretends not to even know who Mary was. Sam asks Wally leading questions to find out if he's committed to Ann. David finds a hole in the fence, but Colleen cannot remember seeing Mary during the exercise period. Jack tells Brenda that Don is double-crossing Fellowes and needs the money to get away. Lionel Fellowes is one step ahead, and tells Ray to dispose of Don. Joan discharges herself from hospital against medical advice, saying she has "things to do". Minnie runs rings round Det. Insp. Thorne and manages to avoid giving him any useful information. Randi pretends to apologise to Meg in order to slip something into her pocket: Pixie sees the incident, bumps into Meg and lifts it from her pocket. Randi asks to see Ann about a receipt for a diamond necklace which she claims to have given to Meg before dinner. Meg denies it and to settle the matter Ann allows Randi to search Meg's pockets. Meg demands to be given a locker search and body search for her own protection. Joan takes out a high interest cash loan from a finance house. David tells Pixie he's given her an alibi so she doesn't need to be interviewed by the police about the attack on Joan. Meg explains to Ann about Randi and Marty and tells her she thinks this is why Randi is trying to set her up. Ann is told that Judy has been sentenced to 5 years. David offers to help "free" Sonia when she tries to sound him out to see whether he would be willing to smuggle goods inside. Lizzie fakes a heart attack in Minnie's pickpocketing class and empties Cass and Pixie's pockets. The things in Pixie's pocket include Randi's necklace. Randi tries to claim the necklace back, but Minnie allows Pixie to keep it. Pixie is knocked out in her cell and the necklace taken: Meg finds her when she accompanies Judy back to her cell. Ann notices a lump in her breast. The women realise Tracy Dixon has gone missing. Joan goes to pay off the blackmailer, but finds him dead.

  • The LSD trip is such a classic that it deserves a page to itself.

Wally may be the only male character to get a nipple closeup in the rather disturbing "morning after" scene with Samantha.

... and searches his room to recover the tape. She finds it (without much trouble) in its hiding place up the chimney. Minnie suspects Bobbie of the attack on Pixie. Ann excuses herself for not wanting Wally to even touch her. Bobbie does indeed have the necklace, hidden in her Walkman. Tracy Dixon is missing at a head count. The women are shocked to see Joan return to work when she walks into the dining room during breakfast. She strides up and down and glares silently at the women who attacked her. Minnie advises Bobbie to volunteer for work so she isn't left on her own during the day, but Meg tells her there are no places left as everyone seems to want to work that day. Joan tells Sonia she got the tape back. The Minister warns Ann there must be no more escapes and gives her a list of new security measures to implement. David disagrees with Joan's views on security and asks her if she's ever wondered why it was her the women singled out to attack and not some other officer. Joan finds out from Bobbie who was behind the attack on her and tells her to make Phyllis sweat a bit by letting her know she has told Joan about her involvement. Ann asks Scott about routine breast examinations for the women as a way of confirming her fears about herself. Phyllis bashes Bobbie, and Joan is there on cue to catch her, ruining her chance of parole. Joan and David discuss the escapes: Joan points the finger at Minnie, as she is the only one with the brains for the necessary planning. Ann makes an appointment to see the doctor. Inspector Thorne questions Joan about Don Baxter: the police suspect he was a hit man with a contract on her, but strangely turns down the invitation to point the finger at the women, possibly out of relief that she's off the hook herself. She goes to the laundry and tells she'll pick them off one by one. Minnie retorts that she'd better start with her if that's her plan. David tells Sonia he will set her free the next afternoon, though Sonia's suspicions don't seem to be aroused by the fact that he doesn't want anything in return. Two of Fellowes' henchmen break into Joan's house and warn her not to interfere in the drugs trade: to reinforce the point, they force her to take LSD. Pixie finds Bobbie with the necklace and knocks her out with a single punch. Sam has a surprise visit from Wally. Pixie's new found boxing skill proves not to be just a lucky hit, as she demonstrates to Cass. Joan relives her hanging as a bad acid trip, featuring Meg as a judge in goldface "Joker" makeup and the women accusing her of a series of crimes against them. The hangman prepares the rope and Joan imagines herself twisting and turning at the end of it. Ann goes up the attic and knocks on Wally's door, but he's not there. Ann finds out where he's been when she sees him next morning being dropped off outside by Sam. Wentworth receives an anonymous phone call about strange noises coming from Joan's house. Joan comes down from her trip with blood on her hands and finds she has killed her dog Major with a pair of scissors.

  • The credits include "thanks to the Malvern and Box Hill police stations".

This unexplained character at the identity parade (plainclothes policewoman?) looks rather like Deborra Lee-Furness.

Colleen asks Meg to call on Joan: she finds her in a state of shock and calls the police. Wally arrives back at Ann's after a night of steamy sex with Sam, but she is in too much of a rush to stop and talk to him. With Cass encouraging her, Bobbie apologises to the women. Pixie responds by apologising for knocking her out. Joan encourages the police officer in supporting Insp Thorne's theory that there is a contract out on her. However, he is sceptical and says that if there were a contract out on her, they wouldn't be playing around like this. Ann is unable to discuss her fears of breast cancer with a doctor she doesn't know, and his jumping to conclusions doesn't help either. Paul is picked out on an identity parade by a young girl claiming to have posed for porn photos for him . Randi insists Ann takes some action over Meg's theft of her necklace. Wally recognizes the man who is waiting for the witness as the same man who came to Paul's shop, and this connection provides further evidence that Paul was set up. Joan returns to work and goes straight for Sonia for details of the men who broke into her house: she lags on Brenda and gives Joan details of the drug and forged licence rackets. Joan sends Sonia back to work and tells her to send Brenda to her in their cell. Colleen tries to warn Randi that setting Meg up isn't a good idea. Randi meets David by a security gate and gets into conversation with him about the escapes. David cannot wait when Sonia fails to turn up: he offers to free Randi instead and leads her to the boiler room... Joan wrecks Sonia's cell and has Brenda sent to isolation for it. Colleen hands Ann the file on a new prisoner, Belinda Johns, convicted of possession of illegal firearms. Belinda is blind and is put in to share with Judy when she is moved to a new cell. Scott realises why Ann is asking about breast cancer when she tries to find out how reliable the breast examinations are. Joan visits Brenda in isolation and bashes her to get the full details about the prison radio code and finds out the code word is "Bulldog": she tells Brenda to arrange a meeting for her with Fellowes himself. After examining the lump in her breast, Scott sends Ann for a biopsy. David tells Sonia she has lost her chance to escape when she failed to turn up on time, so he had to let someone else go in her place. Belinda gets to meet the women and Cass tells her they will "keep an eye out" for her. Ann tells Minnie that all privileges are suspended indefinitely after the attack on Joan, though the police are unable to lay any charges as a result of their investigations. Ann tries to hint that Joan should apply for a transfer somewhere else "less demanding" but Joan refuses point blank, saying that "Ferguson is at Wentworth for a long time yet". Belinda asks to be introduced to Sonia, and from her reaction it appears she recognises Sonia's voice. Randi's absence is noticed, so the women are sent to the rec room for a head count. David offers to search the boiler room to prevent Colleen going in there. We see why: Randi lies dead at the top of a tank .

  • Ann asks Joan to continue with the search and to make sure the radio broadcasts are discontinued. Colleen tells Ann to go home and she'll hold the fort: Wally meets her outside and insists they talk. David offers to "help" Judy but when she raises the subject of Randi "getting off OK", he pretends not to know what she means. Ann is prevented from telling Wally about her illness by his confession about his misbehaviour with Sam. This infuriates her so much she sends him away. The women are sent back to their cells early. Wally confides in Paul, who innocently invites Wally to dinner with him and Sam. Joan plays "find the toothpaste" with Belinda , who finds it and spreads it up Joan's leg . Sam makes an excuse to leave at the same time as Wally so she can offer him a "lift". He tells her it's over between him and Ann, which she takes as an excuse to take him home with her "no strings". At muster, Belinda asks to work in the laundry, when she hears that Sonia is going there. Brenda comes out of isolation and Joan tells her she'll have to contact Fellowes by phone as the radio link is down. Wally spends another night with Sam: Ann sees her give him a lift home. Pixie starts to fantasise about a "going away" outfit and Minnie makes it clear that she forbids any other escape attempts. Scott recognizes David's mother from an article on unsolved murders, where it says that she was murdered six years previously. Ann lies to Scott about seeing Dr Bauscomb and pretends he has given her the all-clear. David denies that the article is about his mother when Meg sensitively tries to hide the article from him: he claims his mother died 15 years ago. Minnie tells David the escapes have to stop as they are all suffering with the increased security as a result. Brenda is annoyed that Sonia lagged to Joan, and tells her she'll continue with the rackets on her own. Sam tells Paul she's traced Ray Foster back to Lionel Fellowes. Scott checks with Dr Bauscomb, and Colleen overhears his call. Arthur visits Lizzie to discuss her parole hearing the following day. Joan finds the printing plate in Brenda's cell, and when Brenda walks in, Joan reminds her to make the call to Fellowes. Ann tells Colleen that some women are to be transferred out of Wentworth: Joan suggest Brenda. Lizzie looks forward to being granted parole and being free in only one day's time. Sam and Paul persuade the witness to withdraw her statement, and the charges against Paul are dropped. Ray meets Joan as she leaves work and take her to see Fellowes. Bobbie is told her trial is set for the next day. Colleen lets Ann know she's aware of her illness and urges her to see a doctor before it's too late. Ann insists it is none of her business. Lionel Fellowes tells Joan he has nothing to discuss with her and orders Ray to kill her.

The article supposedly on unsolved murders with the picture of Martha Bridges unconvincingly pasted in the middle is acually a page from Time magazine dated Jun 27th 1983. Compare the paragraph beginning "Despite his elevation to the presidency last week, Andropov appears to be still moving cautiously." The rest of the page is an article about British politics. Thanks to Mark Caffrey for identifying the woman in the photo - it's Jan Russ, who not only appeared as one of Maxine's mothers but was also casting director from (409) to the end of the series (thanks to Bjorn's Sun and Rain site for the credit info). I'd quite like to look up a copy of the original page: I wonder if the photo may have been pasted over a picture of Margaret Thatcher in the original?
