  • Joan convinces Fellowes she has a statement from Brenda about Don Baxter's murder which will be handed over to the police in the event that anything happens to her: he tells her he can't even be bothered to have her killed. Even more surprisingly, he agrees to stop the drug trade in Wentworth if Joan will arrange to have Brenda transferred to Barnhurst. Meg visits Ann after finding out about her illness from Colleen. Ann tells her of her fears of cancer caused by her mother's death after a double mastectomy. She adds that her relationship with Wally is over and that she couldn't expect him to want her anyway now. Sonia and Brenda accuse each other of stealing the printing plate when they find it is missing. Joan later lets Brenda know that she took the plate. David tells Sonia to be patient, as he has to deal with Minnie first. Ann sees Dr Bauscomb, who tells her that if a biopsy shows the presence of malignant tissue, it would usually be dealt with by an immediate mastectomy. Bobbie is taken to court, and runs away from her police escort. Joan gives Ann the transfer papers for six women including Brenda. David takes Minnie to the boiler room to show her how he set the others free . Bobbie steals a purse from a woman at a bus stop. Joan finds David about to take Minnie into the boiler room and takes him away to help with the transfers. Joan gives Brenda the plate back before she goes. Dr Bauscomb tells Ann she has to go into hospital for a biopsy. Ann lets Colleen know she will be Acting Governor in her absence. Lizzie waits for her parole hearing: Phyllis comes out having been turned down for hers. Bobbie is caught stealing a Walkman. The chair of the parole board, Sarah Higgins, gives Arthur a grilling. Inspector Thorne reports that there are reports of Mary having been sighted on the Gold Coast, but otherwise there is no proof that any of the missing women left Wentworth, and therefore wants to station police officers inside the prison. Lizzie tries to get sympathy from the parole board over her poor health and weak heart: Sarah Higgins reminds her of her drinking and Nola's murder. Colleen warns Meg they may have to look forward to another Governor being appointed if Ann has to spend a long time in hospital. Joan tells the women that Bobbie is coming back on a six month sentence. Ann pleads with Paul not to tell Wally she's going into hospital. Lizzie is sent out into the garden while the parole board deliberate. Cass is also taken outside for an exercise period all on her own (for no apparent reason). The officers' Union meeting opposes a proposal to bring police officers into Wentworth. Colleen is sent to fetch Lizzie to tell her she has won parole. Lizzie lights a cigarette and drops the match. While trying to stamp out the flames when the match sets fire to some carelessly discarded newspapers, she finds uncovers the hand belonging to a dead body hidden under a pile of leaves. David spots her reaction and pulls a knife on her , saying that there are two bodies and that he "set them free".

Episode (416) was the last to be shown at the end of the 1983 season in the original run in Australia. Hence the very long precredit sequence recapping previous events at the start of (417), and unusually including a few scenes from (415) as well.

  • Lizzie collapses and Cass runs to her aid: David sends her inside to get help. By a strange leap in continuity, David is then shown taking Cass into the shed in the grounds: he tells her he will set her free too. Meg looks after Lizzie and sends Colleen for Scott. David slashes Cass with the knife, but when she is cornered, she swipes at him (with what appears to be a spade) and beheads him . Colleen and Scott hear her screams and find something nasty in the shed. Lizzie is taken to hospital. Bobbie sees this as she is brought back and gives the women the idea that Lizzie has been the victim of an attack. Cass refuses to go to hospital and Scott humours her. Ann tells him the police still haven't worked out the details of what happened and suspect Cass of murdering David. Ann makes an announcement to the women: she tells them that Lizzie and Cass are in hospital, that Mr Bridges has been killed in an "accident" and that Mary and Tracy are dead too and their bodies have been found in the grounds. Minnie is worried that the police will try to frame Cass for the murders. Cass has a flashback and is hardly in any state to be taken to the dining room for breakfast the following morning. Sonia points out that the top dog's muscle seems to be out of action. Scott says the police suspect Bridges murdered his own mother, though she may not have been his mother at all but his first victim, whose name he took to hide his identity. Joan orders Cass from the laundry, where she has gone in search of company. Ann tells Minnie the Department has changed its mind on work release and the monthly open day: Minnie brushes the reforms aside and puts in a word for Braille lessons for Belinda, but says the women would be willing to forego all their privileges if she would do something about getting rid of Joan. Paul tells Wally about his mother's illness out of pique when he sees Wally and Sam together arm in arm. Meg announces the work release scheme to the women and Pixie expresses an interest. Minnie stumbles against Joan in the laundry and takes her keys . Ann tells Wally she can't make any decision about their relationship at the moment and sends him away. The women are appalled that Minnie isn't going to make any proper use of the keys, but only took them to show up Joan's inefficiency. Meg tells Minnie, Judy and Pixie that their visit to Lizzie in hospital has been approved. Joan finally notices that her keys are missing. Judy urges Minnie to get rid of the keys or someone will bash her to get hold of them. Sonia tells Joan who has taken her keys just as the party to visit Lizzie are preparing to leave. Sam arrives to talk to Ann to tell her that it's Ann Wally really loves, so she is nobly "standing aside". Someone adds ground glass to Sonia's hand cream. Ann goes into hospital. Minnie, Judy and Pixie are taken to see Lizzie, but Minnie is unable to dump Joan's keys. Meg finds Joan tied up in the shower block : she accuses Minnie.

  • Considering his fate during the last episode, it's unlikely that David Bridges appears in this one! However Joyce (who was not beheaded) does not appear either (thanks Mark C).

Colleen tries to calm Joan down and reminds her who is Acting Governor but Joan threatens to go direct to the Minister if Colleen will not take action to recover her keys. Minnie is at the hospital and worries that a cell search could be called in her absence. Colleen refuses to let Joan search Minnie's cell: Meg finds the keys almost immediately. [When did Minnie get the chance to hide them?] Sonia uses the spiked hand cream. Judy and the others are allowed in to see Lizzie, and she wants to know how Cass is. Lizzie remembers how she felt when she lost consciousness and says she saw Mum, Paddy, Mouse, Hazel and Maxine. On her return to Wentworth, Minnie is taken straight to see the Governor. She denies attacking Joan, but admits taking the keys. Colleen nevertheless charges her for both offences and sends her to solitary. Sonia tests Phyllis by asking her to try out the hand cream, which she does not hesitate to do. Minnie dips Joan's keys again as she puts her in solitary, just to annoy her. Pixie sees a social worker about work release, but is only offered menial jobs. Sonia recruits Phyllis to find out who spiked her hand cream. Colleen admits to Meg she doesn't believe Joan's accusation against Minnie. Sonia offers to cause trouble to advance Joan's position in return for goods and the top dog position. Cass gets upset when Minnie isn't around and gets in such a state that she convinces herself that Minnie has been transferred. Scott tells Colleen he's handing in his resignation to move somewhere else and start a new life with Petra. Sonia hands out some chocolates Joan has brought in: Judy stamps on hers. Ann sees the surgeon after her operation: she has been given a mastectomy. Pixie gets separated from Meg in a shopping mall during a visit for a job interview and wanders off on her own. Scott hands over the surgery keys to Joan: she uses them to get a bottle from the drugs cabinet. Pixie finds a wedding dress shop and delightedly tries on dress after dress. Bobbie catches a mouse, and Cass decides to keep it as a pet . Ann tells Wally she refuses to see Wally, even though he comes to the hospital to visit her. Pixie presents herself at the gate of Wentworth asking to be let back in: she tells the women she's been offered a part-time job at the wedding dress shop, though without telling them who she really is. Minnie is poisoned by the meal brought to solitary by Cass .

And look who suddenly pops up in the background

Minnie is found next morning in pain, but manages to speak to Phyllis to tell her of her suspicion she was poisoned. Meg agrees to see Miss Schumann to explain about Pixie, but tells Pixie she should prepare herself to lose the job. Joan tells Cass to get used to being on her own as Minnie won't be back in a hurry. When Cass wonders aloud what she means, Phyllis tells the women that Minnie accused Joan of poisoning her. Colleen assures Judy that she will send Minnie for tests, but Judy isn't satisfied and says they could all be dead by the time the results come through. Judy organises a roof-top protest, seemingly having forgotten what happened the last time she did this. Meg fends off reporters wanting the story about Cass killing David Bridges, and makes an incautious remark about Cass only doing what she did to defend herself. Colleen tells Joan she will hear the charges against Minnie herself rather than call in the VJ. Joan stops Bobbie and Cass in the corridor with the laundry skip: she finds Cass's mouse hidden among the laundry and tells her to get rid of it. The women refuse to eat lunch: Joan tastes it to defuse the implication that it is poisoned. Miss Schumann phones Colleen to say she will give Pixie a week's trial. The women prevent Joyce from leaving the dining room while Cass and Judy slip away. Colleen gives Minnie an extra 7 days on her as yet non-existent sentence. Judy and Cass unfurl a banner on the roof reading "KILLER SCREWS MUST GO!" for the benefit of the reporters at the gate, confirming the off-hand remark made by Meg. Colleen agrees to Joan's demands for discipline but only gives a mild punishment by taking away the women's buyup and visiting rights. Ann asks Colleen to come to hospital to visit her after seeing partial reports of the protest on the news. Helen Smart is transferred back from Barnhurst for assaulting an officer who tried to force her to have sex with him. Lizzie sends a hamper as a present for the women: Joan hands it over to Sonia, and tells her she's transferred Marge Briggs from D block as muscle for her. Joan sees the Minister while Colleen is away visiting Ann and hands him a report on recent events and her suggestions for improvements in security. He also wants to know who spoke to the press : Meg is blamed and demoted, while Joan takes over as Acting Deputy. Marge goads Cass into a fight, which has developed into a general brawl by the time the Minister arrives on his tour of inspection. Cass slips out of the rec room before Meg locks the door, and goes to her cell: she finds her pet mouse dead .

    EPISODE 420

  • Cass promises "Snoopy" she'll find out who murdered him and kill her. The women are let out of the rec room: Marge has been sent to solitary. Sonia says to Joan that she got what she wanted so what will she do to pay her back? Joan tells her she can expect no favours. Cass flings a chair at Joan when she opens her cell door to let Pixie back in, so Pixie is put in to share with Sonia for the night. Meanwhile, Cass wrecks her cell. Joan admits she's contacted D block on her own authority to tell them to send over some male officers to help with the disturbance: Colleen tells her to cancel them. Minnie calms Cass down so Sister Kelly can tranquillise her. Pixie finds the stolen goods in the bottom of Sonia's locker. Cass is taken to isolation and strapped to her bed: Joan takes advantage of her confused state to tell her that Minnie is to blame for her situation . Minnie returns to the women and finds out that Cass had become upset after finding her mouse dead and that Joan is now Deputy Governor. Colleen announces tighter security including the cancellation of work release: when Pixie points out she wasn't involved in the disturbance she is allowed to go after all - especially when Joan speaks up against it. Sonia offers to give the women credit when the women refuse to buy her goods on the grounds that they are broke. Judy packs up Lizzie's things: Sid's photo cues a voiceover flashback. Minnie tells Judy she ought to take over as top dog because only she can command the women's support. Pixie starts her job and she meets her new boss when she and Mr Schumann try to sell each other a wedding dress, which gives her the opportunity to thank him for giving her a chance to prove herself. Wally visits Ann to tell her he's leaving town. Cass rejects Minnie for lying to her that they wouldn't put restraints on her, so Minnie complains to Colleen about Cass's medical treatment. Colleen orders Joan to remove Cass's restraints , which Joan does with a smug smile as she evidently expects it to go horribly wrong. Phyllis finds Sonia's mirrored wall cabinet broken as she (and others) come to buy goods. Helen explains to Bobbie that she's just bought some of the goods from Lizzie's hamper, which was supposed to be a gift for all of them. Colleen finds out the real reason for Cass's outburst and she and Meg agree that it could well have Joan who killed the mouse. Minnie orders the women not to buy anything else from Sonia. Cass is returned to the women, but snubs Minnie. Sonia tells Joan about Minnie's medical tests. Ann agrees to see Wally and they make up. Sonia is stabbed in the back with a piece of her broken mirror . Minnie's test results come through: Colleen tells Joan as she is leaving work that she wants to see her about them first thing next morning. On her way home, Joan sees Colleen run over a wino, then drive off when he staggers away. She follows and finds two witnesses to the accident, and the (now dead) wino. Joan makes an anonymous call to the police.
