  • OTHER CHARACTERS
Gate guard (voice over on the phone to reception)

Officers Green and Gorman appear, but have no dialogue.

Joan's remark about "seventy customers" for the shop gives another contradictory indication of the population of Wentworth.

As the women work on the garden shed, Kath cuts Spider down to size by telling her she's been selected to run the shop, not Spider. Alice wants something to be done about Sarah: Rita argues she's scared and will calm down eventually. Rodney argues in favour of Kath to run the shop, and when Ann asks him why he comes up with the strange argument that as she's not in favour with the women there won't be any scams going on (or much in the way of sales either, presumably?). Kath is told officially that she will run the shop. Spider tells Vicki she is planning to give up trading: Joan overhears and warns Spider to keep out of trouble, or she'll tell Lisa about the mix-up with her message to Lester. Pamela suggests a tough prisoner is needed to put Sarah in her place: Joan agrees that Rita could do it and Pamela is taken to talk to her. Rita is not enthusiastic about the plan and scoffs that the "bleeding heart" approach has failed. Sarah scares Merle when she has to take her meal to solitary by growling at her and Rodney calls her a "stupid savage". Spider asks Rita and Alice for protection and tells them what happened: they drag her off to confess to Lisa. Kath makes a false compartment at the base of the shelves in the shop to hide booze and pills. Joan agrees to let Kath sell "grass" and pills but rules out selling hard drugs. Kath protests that this will leave the market open for Spider, but Joan informs her she's gone out of business. Spider tells Lisa the truth (or a version of it), and this causes her recovers her voice sufficiently to abuse her as a "bitch" and a "slag" . Ann has Lisa and Spider called to her office and warns Lisa not to take revenge, pointing out that she must share the blame for Lester's death. As she leaves the Governor's office, Spider tells Joan she can't threaten her any more now that Lisa knows the truth and she's going back into business. Pamela (clumsily) tries to get closer to Rita by drawing an analogy between the bikie gang and the Black Power movement she used to belong to. Lisa shows the women how to say "I hope all your chucks turn into emus and kick your dunny door down" in sign language. Rita assigns a rota of minders to Sarah as much to keep her off her potential attackers as the other way round. Spider lights a fire under the shop , but Merle notices it when she puts a warning poster (of Alvin Stardust? ) on the door of the shop and extinguishes it before it catches hold. Sarah is put to work in the kitchen and sends up Mervin for his racist assumption that all Aborigines are workshy drunkards. Just as Spider tries to hold a closing down sale, Merle arrives to tell Spider off for starting the fire. Lisa and Lorelei get Mervin's permission to take Sarah out of the kitchen for a make-up session. Kath informs on Spider for attempting to burn down the shop: Joan tells Rodney to sort Spider out after lights out. Kath tells Rodney he has to bash Spider as Joan wants, for her sake. Joan takes advantage of Sarah pouring sugar over Spider to transfer Sarah to Rita's cell to leave Spider alone. Joan tells Spider she can expect a visitor after lights out. Spider begs for help from Rita and asks Mervin to tell Joyce she will be bashed, but neither of them will help her. Spider asks Rodney for help and he promises he will be there to keep an eye on her. The women argue whether to raise the alarm to help Spider. Joan ridicules Mervin's concern for Spider as he is going home by reminding him he's only the cook, and tells Rodney he must go ahead with the bashing. The women start beating out a rhythm when they realise that someone is approaching Spider's cell and she just has time to identify Rodney by shouting out his name before he fells her with a (very convincing) punch and leaves her bleeding on the floor .

  • Rodney tells Ann "I'm not an officer any more, Mrs Reynolds: I know my job backwards". Presumably this is a line fluff and he should have said that he's not a trainee officer any more.

Spider claims to have been watching Joan for "four bloody years" but Joan at least has been there to observe for longer than that.

Joan stops the beating, sends Rodney out of the cell and takes Spider to sick-bay, despite her initial insistence that she won't be cleaned up until the Governor sees her. Spider accuses Rodney and Joan to Joyce when she arrives on the scene, but Joan pours scorn on the allegation. Joan is angry with Rodney for "going too far" and tells him she will insist on an immediate Departmental investigation, but she will fix it so it appears that Spider is trying to frame her and Rodney. Rodney is interviewed by Mr Harrow from Internal Affairs but his denials that he even touched Spider fails to convince him even though Rodney's hands are unbruised when he is asked to show them. Spider is put back in her cell as the other women shout to her to try to find out: Spider shouts back that she is sure Rodney and Joan will be out of a job and they have her to thank for it. Joan backs up Rodney by claiming Spider must have got someone to bash her before lockup. Mr Harrow tells Ann that he has no evidence and rules that charges against Joan and Rodney are to be dropped. The women are outraged when Ann announces the decision in the dining room. Alice warns Spider she should not to take action on her own or they will lose the shop. Ann warns Rodney to watch his step and if she ever finds any evidence that he bashed Spider, he could still be prosecuted. Marty has to prevent Sarah going for Spider when they trade insults walking along the corridor after muster. Lisa is shown Lester's pitifully few possessions in a cardboard box and a note from Wendy, which she tears up, but it turns out she cannot keep any of the things. Rita tries to explain to Sarah why they have to back Spider against the officers. Rodney tries to suck up to Joan, but she freezes him out. Lorelei and Lisa comfort each other. Marty sends Merle and Sarah to get paint for the shed, but Sarah scares Merle away by pretending she's about to put a curse on her. Spider takes the opportunity to drive a tractor at Sarah, but Merle pushes her out of the way . Lorelei tries to arrange Lisa's modelling career, and asks Joyce for permission to use the camera from Lester's box of stuff. Merle defends Sarah when Vicki pretends to attack her with a plank of wood. Pamela asks Ann to lunch with Sarah's foster parents. Sarah knocks Merle out with a door thinking she's Vicki and has to run to get Lorelei from the workshop to help. Vicki offers to paint up a sign for the shop . Merle comes round and Lorelei decides she doesn't need to see the Sister. Vicki and Spider are thrown out of the rec room by the other women when they insist on making puerile racist comments. At their dinner meeting, the Wests tell Ann and Pamela they are unsure whether to tell Sarah what they have found out about her real parents: her mother died about six months before and her father is a white alcoholic jackaroo who probably can't even be traced. Rita decides on a suitable punishment for Spider and the women put the plot into action. Vicki is moved in to share with Spider. Sarah is brought to see the treatment the women have given her: she's been blacked up with mud and her hair twisted into devil's horns. For some inexplicable reason, Sarah does not seem to find the sight very amusing. Pamela and Ann come to talk to Sarah and see Spider in blackface.

Unusually, the whole of the final scene of the previous episode is repeated at the start of this episode after the credit sequence (approximately 2 minutes 15 seconds of it). I suspect that this episode may have been intended as the year end episode and the usual lengthy recap at the start of the first episode after the Christmas/New Year break was simply incorporated within the programme itself.

  • Sarah is about to take responsibility for painting Spider, but the other women step forward at the same time to share the blame. Sarah offers to call quits on the feud with Spider, but Spider rejects it. Joan phones up a contact to set up the merchandise for Rodney to collect on his trip out of the prison with Kath and Merle. Sarah is told about her real parents and that her father's name is Franklin but she rejects the information and refuses to let the Wests visit her. Vicki warns Spider not to be too keen to put revenge against Sarah get the better of her business plans. Kath gives Merle a poncho to wear on their shopping trip, which is the only thing she has that will fit her. Meg returns to work from holiday in the outback. Rita makes Sarah talk her problems over. Meg's presents for her colleagues include a "precious thing" for Mervin and a "frightful tea towel" for Joyce. Merle and Kath load up the car while Rodney collects the drugs and booze from a man in the car park. While Kath takes Merle to an amusement arcade followed by a skating rink, he hides the drugs in cold cream jars. Ann gives the women permission to use the camera as long as Joyce takes the photos. Meg gives the women a souvenir boomerang to put up on the wall. Rita agrees to try to convince Sarah to see the Wests and Pamela says she will try to get them to visit just in case. Joan tells Kath to start selling the contraband straight away rather than wait until the shop is established as Kath wants. Lorelei sympathises with Sarah over the loss of her mother and Sarah urges her to get Zoe back from her foster parents. The women are given their first chance to buy goods from the shop. The boomerang Meg brought back from holiday crashes suddenly through the Ann's window just as she, Meg and Pamela are discussing the marked improvement in the women's behaviour since they knew they were getting the shop. It turns out to have been Merle trying it out. Alice orders some booze from Kath, and goes straight to Rita to tell her about it. Rita tries to find out from Merle what happened on her and Kath's trip out, but what she says makes no sense. Joan orders Kath to double her prices after only one day's "introductory" sale. Rita has to drag Sarah outside to see her foster parents and then has to force her to speak to them. Spider overhears Kath quoting the new prices, and offers to undercut them until Kath threatens her. Mr West tells Sarah he thinks he may have traced her real father and tells her that he wants to see her. Rita leads a boycott of the shop over the price rises .

  • Vera must still be Governor of Barnhurst, though why "neither Craven nor Bennett" will deliver the Minister's speech is a mystery: you'd have thought they'd be queuing up.

Sarah tells her foster parents she still regards them as her parents and wants to live with them when she gets out. Rodney makes a fool of himself by trying to separate Sarah from the Wests because she "touched" them. Rita (speaking for Alice) gets the women to vote in favour of a complete ban on buying anything from the shop. Joan blames Kath and Rodney for the ban and orders Rodney to go and make sure Rita is put in soltary. Rodney incites Rita by using racist abuse about Sarah in front of her. When Rita prods him gently in the lapels he tells her she will have to go to solitary for assaulting an officer. On the principle that she may as well do what she is charged with, Rita elbows Rodney in the nose. The Wests decide to pay the legal bills for Sarah's appeal and tell Ann they want to say thanks to Rita, but Joan spoils the moment by bursting in and announcing that Rita is in solitary. Sarah makes a bull roarer for Merle: Ann hears the noise and sends Delia to investigate. Ann talks to the women and threatens to disband the shop. Faced with the prospect of losing the shop altogether, Alice persuades the women to drop the boycott, but only for legitimate goods, and they will continue the ban for any contraband which will hit Kath where it hurts and let them still keep the shop. Sarah gets a message to Rita with Merle's help, but so does Vicki, who delivers the meal it is hidden in, who tells her that the women have voted to go back to the shop. Joan instructs Kath how to fix the purchase book so that they can cream off a percentage of the legitimate sales from the shop. Rita looks outside on a prearranged signal to see Sarah using the hosepipe on the officers to get sent to solitary . When the women return to the shop to buy goods, Alice makes Lisa give back a free miniature of booze which Kath has slipped to her. Joan tries to defend Rodney when he has to face Ann, but she is sent outside and Ann confronts him directly about his racist remarks. As a result, Ann tells Rita she is to be let out of solitary next day, as Rodney has dropped the assault charges. When Rita asks what would have happened if he hadn't, Ann replies that she would have been sent to Blackmoor. Joan slaps Rodney for repeating his racist remarks. Kath confirms that the women are not buying contraband, and cons Alice into going to Lorelei's cell to be beaten by Rodney and forced to drink alcohol . Lorelei finds her drunk and the women decide to ignore her decision and buy contraband. Merle likes the pizza so much that she turns up to both lunch sittings and eats far too much, with plenty of added chilli sauce. Kath tells the women that Alice did buy the alcohol from her, and starts taking their orders: only Lorelei and Rita believe Alice's protestations that she was set up. Merle is out of action with bad indigestion and Spider comes to gloat over Kath's defencelessness now that Rita is out of solitary. Rita chases after Kath, but finds she is helping Merle to the infirmary and has to join in. Ann is appalled that the Minister expects her to read his prepared speech at a conference. Rita confronts Kath in the shop , as Rodney and Joan wait outside. Joan sends Rodney to get witnesses then wrecks the shop and announces that in Ann's absence she is Acting Governor and Rita is to be transferred to Blackmoor.

Ann embarrasses the Minister by mentioning reform projects at the conference, but is called away to the phone by Meg. Sarah sees Rita being transferred and tells the women: Alice is put on the spot, but Spider and Vicki decide to support her and declare a strike. Ann arrives back and is outraged. Kath leads some of the women back to work, as Alice leads a protest. Joan tells Kath she will be top dog again. Ann talks to the protesters and orders that the women are to be locked in their cells. Rita gets her first sight of Blackmoor : she fails to send on an imaginary white line at induction and is sent to the pound . Governor Craven tells Brumby she will be sharing a cell with Rita. The Minister refuses to transfer Rita back. The women at Blackmoor listen to Rita's fight with the officers. Alice proposes a hunger strike. Joan gives Kath her orders, and Kath drops a plate in Alice's lap to provoke a confrontation: Joan takes them both outside and arranges a fight between them, then gives Kath some lead to make a cosh. Sarah asks Pamela to visit Rita in Blackmoor. Brumby tells Rita about Roo Morgan, the top dog at Blackmoor. Alice and Kath fight in the laundry and Alice is knocked out almost immediately. Kath is voted in as top dog. Pamela is denied permission to see Rita by Craven. Rita sees Bongo as the male prisoners are led through the exercise yard : Brumby tells her he's been in Blackmoor for about 3 weeks and is a junkie being fed dope by Roo Morgan.
