Phyllis finds herself using the same bar of soap in the showers . Meg reports the incident to Ann and passes on her suspicion that it was an attempt to injure Sonia, possibly because the women have realised who she is and why she is inside. Lizzie gets another telegram: Mick has moved his trip forward and is due to arrive in four days. Sonia turns on the charm for Ann to avoid having to take up her offer to be moved to isolation. Eddie visits and tells Sonia he is having no luck proving her claim of a frame-up and challenges her over Jerry. She pretends she has no idea who Jerry is. Hazel sees her husband and kids for the last time when they arrange to meet in a park . Sonia phones Jerry and tells him she wants to be got out of Wentworth straight away: he visits and slips her some money in a glossy magazine after Joyce Barry has searched it. Sonia bluntly proposes a business deal to Joan to help her escape, and threatens to harm her dog if she will not co-operate. Sonia knocks over an ashtray so that Bea will take a swipe at her just as Joan walks in so that Joan will put her on a charge. Helen sees her solicitor: she is told Sharon will be called to testify against her and warned that the shortest sentence she can expect will be six months. Wally visits Mrs Beeton to find out some dirt about Rod. Randi explains to Meg why she prefers prostitution to office work. Wally visits Rosemary to tell her that he's found out something about Rod that might help get her released. Joan tells Sonia the escape has been arranged: she will go out through the loading bay but only if Joan gets immediate payment. Next morning, Joan casually mentions to Sonia that Jerry has been shot and killed by the police and their stash of money recovered. Wally tells Rod that one of his ex girlfriends has informed on him about his theft of goods from the supermarket: this has the desired effect of making Rod drop charges against Rosemary. Rosemary is released and Wally promises to find her a place to live and a job. Pixie gives Rosemary a personal ad to place in the newspaper on her behalf. Joan distracts Colleen while Sonia hides in the laundry van, then stops the van and embarrasses both Colleen and Sonia by pulling open the laundry sack where Sonia is hiding .

Sonia says nothing when interviewed by Ann about the escape attempt. Ann asks Joan how Sonia got in the van: she blames Colleen. Rosemary goes to live at Driscoll and immediately phones to place Pixie's advert in the Dispatch. Joan says she'll let her run whatever racket she likes to try to earn a bit of her money back. Joan tries to object to Ann's plan to put Sonia to share a cell with Petra, but senses she shouldn't push it too far or make it obvious that she's seeking favours for Sonia. Sonia is not pleased with the news that she won't be getting a single cell, but tells Joan of her idea for a numbers racket with Phyllis to front it. Arthur Richards is persuaded to allow Lizzie day release to meet Foxy. Sonia is moved to Petra's cell, and Petra is about as pleased with this as Sonia is. Rosemary starts a job in a chip shop and is warned about the boss by her predecessor. Arthur Richards hints to Ann that because of Sonia's "standing in the community" she ought to drop some of the charges arising from the escape attempt, but Ann stands firm. Petra sees her solicitor about her trial: she finally agrees to tell the whole truth about her father. Sonia starts to make demands of Joan, but gets a slap in the face to pull her into line. Lizzie is worried that she doesn't have anything to wear to meet Mick, so Bea proposes she is given a grant from the Fresh Start fund to buy a new outfit. Judy tells Hazel that her court appearance went well as the charges were dismissed, but Helen wasn't so lucky and was sentenced to three years in Barnhurst. Pixie is pleased to see her advert in the paper. Phyllis starts selling numbers: Bea is suspicious, but agrees that it can go ahead. Bea gets Irene Henderson to let Lizzie use her house for Mick's visit: Colleen says she will ask permission, but that she and Meg will be going along too. Phyllis tries to back out of the numbers racket when she gets only a tiny payout from Sonia, but Sonia says she'll have to put up with it. Hazel visits Wentworth to see her old mates: Phyllis walks away without speaking to her, and Hazel guesses this is because she's squeamish and afraid of illness. Lizzie gets her new clothes and practises talking posh with the help of an elocution tape: Randi and Petra give additional lessons in sophistication. Joan threatens Phyllis when she wants to back out of the numbers racket. Hazel's illness worsens , and she loses her sight.

Randi and Marty will never be

Bea asks Phyllis if Joan is taking a cut from her racket: Phyllis nervously and unconvincingly denies it. Judy refuses to let Scott admit Hazel to hospital. Scott prescribes morphine for Hazel and warns Judy not to give her more than four doses in 24 hours. Bea catches Phyllis handing money over to Sonia and warns Sonia to make sure she gives it all back to the women it came from by next morning. Bea announces that the numbers game is over and no-one should buy any more, but Phyllis heavies Pixie and Lizzie into buying numbers later on. Randi is released. Replies to Pixie's ad arrive at Wentworth. Colleen and Meg accompany Lizzie on her day release: she demands to go the hairdresser first. [The shocking wallpaper ought to have been a warning in itself, so it isn't surprising it wasn't seen that this is a perfect Louise Brooks bob that needs no attention at all.] Fred harasses Rosemary so she walks out. Eddie asks Sonia again about Jerry Turner: she tells him the truth, and that their marriage is a cover for her other activities. Lizzie is disappointed with her hairdo and is outraged by the cost after her usual experience of having it done by "Madame Beatrice" for a "couple of fags". Pixie sorts through her replies, some of which are too explicit about what they want for Pixie's delicate tastes. Lizzie meets Mick at the airport: Colleen is introduced as her daughter and Meg as her secretary, but they quickly become annoyed at the lies they are forced to tell to cover the extravagant stories Lizzie put in her letters. When they all go to Irene's house, the butler Watson has to show Mick around the house. Bea catches Pixie hiding Lizzie's winnings under her pillow and goes to confront Sonia. The butler has to force Lizzie to put back a porcelain figurine after she finds out from Foxy what it's worth. Joan catches Bea punching Sonia, and puts her on a charge. Mick confesses to Meg and Colleen that he's broke, after her overhears them talking about Lizzie and finds out that she is not what he thought either. They all agree to keep Lizzie in the dark, and Foxy leaves while Lizzie is still asleep. Lizzie later admits that she'd noticed something was wrong when Foxy didn't offer to pay for a single thing all day, and that she pretended to be asleep when she felt he was working up to proposing marriage to her. Petra gets a life sentence at her trial . Hazel begs Judy to kill her by giving her an overdose.

    Tammy Fisher ~ Louise Siversen

  • Written by Coral Drouyn
  • Directed by Mark De Friest
  • Mrs O'Reagan is credited as "Mrs O'Regan". Meg does not appear in this episode.

Judy refuses to help Hazel, even by putting all her pill sat her bed-side so she can take them herself. Bea tells the women of her suspicion that Phyllis isn't working for Sonia, but for Joan. Ann can't see any reason why Pixie shouldn't be allowed to reply to the responses to her ad provided she doesn't break any of the censorship rules. Sonia gives Bea notice she intends to take over, and intends to buy the women's support. Petra rejects Sonia's latest overtures of friendship and tells her she won't find Bea so easy to get rid of. The women help Pixie to compose her replies, though as Lizzie remarks there are a few that are too depraved even to read - like the one from the man who says he has a "German Shepherd" (...?!) Sonia suggests to Joan she turns a blind eye to the making of illicit grog, and Joan sees the appeal of Sonia's argument that Joan couldn't be blamed because no-one would ever believe she could be involved (..really?) Joan makes Pixie pick up one of her letters after Sonia has contemptuously screwed it up into a ball and thrown it on the floor. Wally warns Judy not to risk being sent back to Wentworth for aiding a suicide. Joan orders Lizzie to steal material from the kitchen, while Sonia saves potato peel from a huge pile Pixie has peeled . Mrs O'Reagan goes to Ann to complain about Pixie and reports missing sugar and yeast. Rosemary starts work as a waitress and gets her first order mixed up, then spills soup on the manager, so she is fired. At first the cell search fails to turn up the missing goods from the kitchen, but Joan deliberately takes Pixie to Ann to admit to stealing the goods. Pixie claims they were to make a wedding cake. This makes it seem as though it is just another of Pixie's crazy schemes and so no-one is punished, but Joan only hands over part of the goods. Scott asks Petra to marry him. Pixie tells Bea that she and Lizzie were forced by Joan to steal from the kitchen, so Bea searches the cells herself for the rest of the sugar and yeast. Joan finds her tearing up Pixie's cell and offers to help, taunting her with hide-and-seek type clues, but Bea fails to notice Joan's deliberate hint as to the real hiding place when she says she is "cold". Bea tries heavying Sonia instead, but Sonia just laughs in her face, earning her a punch in the stomach. Judy refuses to let Scott admit Hazel to hospital, though she seems to make her mind up when he tells her Hazel could live for many months in pain. Joan takes Lizzie to the boiler room and gets her to make the booze. Judy changes her mind and helps Hazel to take an overdose .

    EPISODE 400

Broadcast on Channel 5 Wednesday 11 November 1998 04:40 Joan disposes of Bea permanently. Meanwhile, Ann is caught in a compromising situation.

    Shirley Mills ~ Lyn Semmler
Clive Featherstone ~ Robert Van Macklenberg
    Andy West ~ Rod Richardson
    Officer Barfield ~ Delva Hunter
    Frances ~ Wanda Davidson

  • Written by Ian Smith
  • Directed by Mark DeFriest
  • Frances is credited as "Francis"

Meg does not appear in this episode either. Hence perhaps the sudden loquaciousness of Officer Barfield?

Unless Bea is left handed, surely Joan should have made sure the scratches were on her own left cheek as a righthanded person facing you would not usually scratch your right cheek?

And aren't the scratches already visible under the top layer of makeup before Joan attacks herself?

Pixie thinks the stuff has disappeared from the cell because Sonia took it back to the kitchen. When Bea accuses Lizzie directly of making grog, she denies it. Judy lies on her bed recalling her last conversation with Hazel and leaves Betty to find Hazel dead. Petra tells the women about Scott's proposal but says she will turn him down. Scott fills out the death certifictae for Hazel, saying that she died of heart failure. This pricks Judy's guilty conscience and she asks Scott if he thinks anyone will believe that: Betty overhears and starts to work out what really happened. Sonia suggests Joan has Bea transferred to allow her to take over. A newspaper reporter has written to Pixie to get a story for his column, but using a colleague's name so Pixie doesn't recognise who he is. Sonia gives out cigarettes to Lizzie, and she takes them even though Sonia clearly indicates that they came from Joan. Lizzie asks to see the doctor so she can talk to Scott about Petra. Her advice is that he should make Petra "feel like a woman" ... by buying her a bunch of flowers. Joan tells Ann the booze was Bea's idea and that she is planning a riot: she threatens to go over Ann's head to get Bea transferred. Betty accuses Judy of giving Hazel the overdose and is thrown out of Driscoll. Bea breaks up a game of two up and punches Phyllis: Joan puts her in solitary for fighting and organising the gambling. Colleen advises Scott to wait to marry Petra until she is released, though when she admits that the wedding would make Petra's time easier, it seems to make up his mind for him. Rosemary tells Wally that she recognises the name of someone she knew in the replies that Pixie passed on to her, and Wally suggests that she should write back to him. Joan taunts Bea with references to Debbie until she snaps and attacks her . Joan locks her in and goes to the washroom to scratch her own face to provide some "evidence" of the attack, then reports the "incident" to Ann . Scott warns Judy that someone has made allegations about Hazel's death and that there is to be an autopsy. Lizzie tears Clive Featherstone's column out of Officer Barfield's paper to give to Pixie: she thinks it is a lovely piece until Petra points out the reporter is sarcastically making fun of her. Paul comes home early and catches Ann and Wally in their dressing gowns. Pixie worries about Bea but Lizzie says that it can't happen: without Bea they'd all be sunk and Wentworth would be a "living hell". Judy consults Mr Askin, who takes her to the police to give herself up then returns to Driscoll to tell Wally the truth. Sonia takes over the press. Joan takes Bea back to her own cell, where she is told she will be transferred to Barnhurst: Joan leads her past Lizzie having threatened Bea that she will make Lizzie's life a misery if Bea talks to her. Lizzie is distraught that Bea seems to have given her the cold shoulder and collapses behind the locked security gate. The police come to Driscoll to arrest Judy for Hazel's murder.
