  • Lou's escape is prevented by Marlene, who delays her long enough for the officers to catch up with her. A neighbour sees Bobbie breaking in and phones the police. Stan tells Edie he isn't working as an officer, but Edie reassures him she doesn't mind. Lou is sent to solitary, and makes a lunge for Marlene swearing she'll get her own back. Meg comes round to find Phil at her bedside holding her hand (and somehow manages not to scream). Marlene assumes the women will be cross with her, but Myra says she's grateful, as if Lou had got away with it they'd have all been in trouble. Stan covers for Bobbie at the police station and Bobbie says she was scared as she'd never been in a police station before. Privately, he is annoyed with her and assumes she is lying when she says she left a note. Bobbie returns to the prison and tells the women she had a rotten day. Stan tells Ann he helped Bobbie break in to the house to get to her sister, but doesn't tell her the police had been involved. Ann is persuaded by Phil that the softball games can go ahead. Lou pulls out the razor blade she has hidden in her shoe. Myra tells Bobbie not to blame Stan for the misunderstanding or herself for trying to help her sister. Lou tricks Joyce into opening the solitary cell door after lockup time by lying on the floor as if she is dead, then leaps up and takes her hostage, holding the blade to her jugular . Pixie tries to infect Kerryn with her incurable optimism. Ann visits Meg at home and tells her that Erica has resigned from the Department and has a new position in Canberra. Lou makes Joyce unlock the armoury and takes a gun. Stan gets up in the middle of the night to take his heart pills. Lou knocks out Officer Riley and makes Joyce tie her up. She then forces Joyce to drive her out of Wentworth. The alarm sounds: Kerryn thinks it is a fire, but Pixie tells her it means that someone has escaped. Meg is called back to the prison. Stan looks at a picture of a little girl - presumably Mary Ann? - and finds the note from Bobbie under a magazine on the floor, and regrets not believing her. Reb's mother Diedre is woken up by a loud knocking at her front door: it is Lou, who demands money from her. Diedre rather unconvincingly tries to claim she only has ten dollars, so Lou says they'll sit there all night until the banks open and then she can get her a few thousand. Thanks to her chat with Pixie, Kerryn is feeling much brighter. Two boys on bikes find Joyce's car abandoned, but leave in a hurry when they see blood on the back seat. Joan returns to work, and makes slighting remarks about the security lapses while she was away. Diedre waits until Lou falls asleep, unties herself and gets hold of the gun, but makes too much noise, wakes Lou and has to hold her at gunpoint. Joyce is found and released from her own car boot.

  • Diedre's name is spelt "Deidre".

Lou sneers at Diedre that she wouldn't dare shoot her, but the gun goes off anyway and wounds Lou in the arm. Diedre drops the gun and Lou gets it back and demands money and a bandage before she leaves. Marlene makes Ray jealous by telling him that Meg and Phil are in love. Joan is scornful of the weak security that allowed Lou to escape from solitary. Her little flesh wound completely forgotten, Lou glams up in some of Diedre's clothes and fools a policeman with her posh accent, despite Diedre knocking over a vase to attract his attention. Stan asks for Ann's support for Bobbie to be released on licence to his and Edie's care. Kerryn faints in the laundry after not eating for several days. Diedre gets $2,000 and refuses to get Lou any more: Lou tells her to drive her to the airport. Stan apologises to Bobbie for not believing her. Marlene asks Ray to help "his girls" by getting goods in, and tries to break his heart with stories of how bad Pixie's hair is without her proper shampoo. Sister Hall recommends calling in a doctor for Kerryn, who is delirious with a fever. Diedre comes to visit Reb and tells her about Lou's visit and passes on the message that Reb should "skin the Rabbit" for her. Reb tells Diedre to go to the police, but Diedre says she can't involve them. Marlene offers a cash prize on a bet on how long Lou can stay out, as an incentive for the women to buy her cheap merchandise. Tim visits Kerryn and says how sorry he is she got into trouble to help him. She sends him away rather than let him admit it was all his fault. Lou makes it to Adelaide and asks a taxi driver for a fancy hotel and a dress shop. Myra is put on garden duty and finds the dope plants under the shed while having a crafty fag. Joan searches Ray when he arrives at work and finds cosmetics on him but he claims they are his. He tells Joan she should try some or maybe she needs "a big strong Russian lover, like a bear". Stan agrees not to report the dope plants when Myra tells him that Bobbie must be involved. Ray turns out to have much more stuff hidden in his jacket, but Marlene manages to hide all of it in her stocking tops. Meg tells Joan there is a new male officer, Lem Murphy, who is being transferred from Woodridge. Reb approaches Alice for her and Frances to join her in a new business venture. Buy-up is restored, to Marlene's disgust, especially since it was largely to her own credit for stopping Lou's escape. Myra takes Bobbie to her cell for a talk, then bashes her to reinforce the message that there are to be no drugs in Wentworth. The women have another softball game, with Stan taking part and surreptitiously clutching his chest. After speaking to Reb, Ann decides to move her in with Myra. Judy is appalled to see what Myra has done to Bobbie and tells Myra she thinks she did it for the sake of her ego and she is no better than the Freak. Mr Colby, the new head of DCS, comes to arrange for Sarah Higgins' admission to Wentworth, apparently at her request due to a previous good working relationship. After the exertion of the softball game, Stan has a heart attack before he can take his pills.

  • Some of the other women see Bobbie's face for the first time at breakfast: Judy tells them to ask Myra what happened. Ann tells the officers that Sarah Higgins will be held in isolation. Joan is sent to find Stan, as Ann wants to interview him about the smuggling. Myra tells the women she's fed up of the women's ingratitude and she isn't going to apologise for bashing Bobbie. Bobbie defends Myra, saying she thinks she was right to bash her. Joan finds Stan and tries to revive him with the kiss of life. Phil meets his friend Chris in a bar. He's a counsellor at the University and he agrees to talk to Meg in the guise of just being a friend. Reb sucks up to Myra with a very dubious argument that children need to be bashed to feel needed. Bobbie feels responsible for Stan's heart attack, thinking he saw her dope plants. Joan offers the usual cold comfort, saying that Stan is very unlikely to recover, then softens and describes how Stan's heart stopped until she revived him. Len Murphy arrives as a replacement officer and asks to sign the get well card for Stan as he knows him. Joan is disappointed to hear Len mouthing platitudes about rehabilitation. Myra thinks she has heard Len's name and Judy suggests she should ask the PRG to check him out. Joan clears Ray over the smuggling by saying that she personally searched him and found no contraband. Ray can't believe his luck, but it turns out Joan wants a favour in return . Sarah Higgins is interviewed by Ann : she has been charged with taking bribes from prisoner in return for early release. She refuses to admit she's a criminal and reminds her of the "favour" she did for Bobbie. Len asks Bobbie who gave her the black eye and offers to defend her if she needs it. Sarah Higgins is taken to isolation and shocks Meg by her ideas that sterilisation is the only way to stamp out criminality. The women find out there's a mystery prisoner. A "handsome stranger" approaches Lou in a park and offers to buy her dinner. The women hear the news about Sarah Higgins, no attempt at all having been made to confiscate any of their radios. Len finds out Judy used to run the "home for weak women" and makes other disparaging remarks about it. Lou looks in her handbag in the powder room and finds that her new friend has run off with all her money. The restaurant owner gets suspicious and holds Lou while he calls the police. Len starts prying: he finds out from Meg that Judy is lesbian. Joan tells Ray to arrange an accident for Reb and when he protests, she demonstrates she can frame him at any time by showing him the contraband she has already put in his shoulder bag. Bobbie visits Stan, who becomes very agitated when he mentions Len Murphy and warns her to stay away from Len as he's a "wicked sadistic man" and a "brutal killer".

  • Norm doesn't appear in this episode.

Pixie is distracted in the kitchen after receiving a letter from her mother. Ann admits she hasn't told Stan that he's under investigation for recommending Neville Sloan. Kerryn seems better after a course of anti-depressants, but Ann doesn't tell her why she can't contact Lyle. Joan tells Marlene that Lou is coming back and suggests she runs a book on it, but only so she can demands half of Marlene's take. Bobbie tells Myra about what Stan said about Len. Joan and Len distribute the first buyup for weeks, and Len's cynical view about its usefulness in controlling the women chimes in with Joan's own. Alice beats Pixie in a bet on her Bible knowledge by quoting Dickens instead. Phil takes Meg to a party and introduces her to Chris. Pixie tells Judy she's upset that her parents have found out she's in prison. Bobbie hears Joan collecting her payoff from Marlene, but Marlene can't tell her what the hold is that Joan has over her. Gina is jealous of the attention Chris is paying to Meg and bitchily tells her that Chris is a psychologist. Ray realises why Joan has sent Reb to work in the kitchen and starts to set up an "accident" for Reb. Kerryn decides to tell her husband the truth. Joyce returns to work and admits she isn't looking forward to facing Lou Kelly. Ray's courage fails him and he stops Reb picking up the pot of boiling oil from the cooker. Joyce tells Marlene where the quotation comes from. Reb gets Ray to sign a statement and smuggle it out of the prison to hold over Joan's head. Pixie's mother tells her she is in no position to stand in judgement over her, as she and her father are to be divorced. Her father has left her for a woman younger than Pixie. Kerryn asks to phone her husband and Ann reluctantly agrees. Len provokes Judy so he can put her on a charge for insubordination. Joan tells him he's not likely to get the Governor to make it stick, but is taken aback slightly by his attidue to Judy's lesbianism. Sarah Higgins explains to Ann how her attitude to criminals stems from her stepmother who destroyed her father's life. Len catches Marlene hiding biscuits under her mattress, throws them on the floor and steps on Marlene's hand when she picks them up. Ann takes away Judy's priveleges for a week despite alleging victimisation against Len. Outside the Governor's office, Len tells Judy he's disgusted by "queers" like her. Reb shows Joan the statement. Len finds out from Joyce that Joan is a lesbian. Sarah Higgins requests to be allowed to join the other women. Len catches Joan heavying Marlene. After sending Marlene out, he warns Joan she'll be lucky to hold onto her position: he "wouldn't put a dyke in charge of an outhouse, let alone a prison".

  • Judy holds up a caricature of ... guess who?

The women don't believe Marlene's story that Len saved her from being heavied by Joan. Bobbie says she'd rather trust Stan's opinion. Joan is scornful at Ann's idea of consulting Myra about how to cope with Sarah Higgins' request to be put back with the women. Samantha Greenway is brought to Wentworth on a six month sentence for possession of drugs. Phil gives Bobbie a letter Stan has dictated to him: it says the Department has insisted on his retirement, but he will still be applying for custody as soon as he is well. However, Bobbie realises there is very little chance of the parole board agreeing to it. Len wants to know what Joan has over her, and when he finds out, he tells her there are to be no more payoffs and she should stop running the book. However, Marlene is still looking for other money raising schemes, like a lottery on who can hit a softball shot the furthest. Kerryn is told Lyle is not coming to visit her that day, and has not made a date in the future either. Ann agrees to let her have one more phone call to her husband. Len plays dirty to get his softball team to win. Joan gets nothing from the Union rep when she phones him to try to get some dirt on Len. Meg snubs Phil at work and tells him she is still upset about the party. At dinner, Sam gives Judy her meal and admits that (gasp) she's a vegetarian. Alice quips that if she doesn't like "dead meat" she's in the wrong company. Myra is already down on Sam for being a "pusher" and tells her to move to another table. Pixie tries to cheer up Kerryn, who is depressed because Lyle wouldn't talk to her on the phone, and suggests she writes him a letter. While looking for paper, she sees Sam's cartoons of Alice and Fran, but the subjects aren't pleased. Marlene admits to Myra that Joan gave her advance notice of Lou's return so she could run a book on it and take her cut. Myra decides to use Len's obvious rivalry with Joan to set them against each other. Alice and Frances try to heavy Sam into getting drugs in for them, but Judy intervenes. Len challenges Joan about her involvement in rackets, and suggests he has enough on her to make her work for him, but Joan tells him she doesn't play second fiddle to anyone. Kerryn makes the mistake of asking Joan to deliver her urgent note to her husband, but she offhandedly agrees to post it. Pixie and Myra let Joan overhear a conversation that implies that Marlene is still running a book. Len gives Ann a list of suggestions to make Wentworth run "more smoother", but she can't agree to them as she finds some of them "extreme". Myra suggests that Marlene should provide the payoff that Joan will demand from her own bankroll. Lou returns to Wentworth and is inducted by Joyce. Ann gets a dusty answer from Myra about having Sarah put in with the women. Sarah Higgins is brought to the rec room by Len: she tries to be conciliatory and says she is aware it will be awkward. Myra contemptuously blows smoke in her face and leads a mass walk-out from the rec room. Judy checks that Sam is all right and hears her story that she was only arrested for possession of cocaine when she was drunk after finding out she was adopted. Sarah Higgins only gets a serving at lunch when Joan stands behind her to see to it. Len takes Marlene on tray duty to deliver Lou's meal in solitary: she drops it at Lou's feet, so Len sends her to get another. This gives Len an opportunity to introduce himself to Lou: when she refuses to clean up the mess, Len tells her she can do without a meal. Kerryn frets that she hasn't had a reply from Lyle: Joan seems bored and says it's been delivered, so if he'd wanted to reply he could have done by now. In fact, Tim has held the note back, and only when he sees that Lyle is already going to Wentworth does he hand it over and tell his father the truth. Len selects Marlene, Reb, Judy and Myra and starts handyman classes. During exercise period, Kerryn walks away from the other women and uses a stone to break the padlock on the inner gate. Elaine Weiss from the PRG explains Len's hatred of lesbians: his wife left him for another woman. Ann gives permission for Lyle to see Kerryn and sends Joan to find her. Lyle tells Ann the whole story, and she says the major charge against Kerryn could be quashed on appeal. Joan and Joyce find the gate open and when they check the visitor's suite they find that Kerryn has hung herself .
