TACTLESS SOLICITORS

Dishonouring their profession by an incautious choice of words are:- Basil Humphreys, Max Purvis and Peter Bladen

UNION TYPES

Unions just make trouble for everyone and stop people doing their job, don't they? The stirrers and troublemakers in Prisoner are:- Hazel Crowe, Frank Bolton and Ernie Rowland. And think of that firebrand Joyce Barry, whose uncompromising stance on labour issues eclipses the efforts of her predecessors as Union Rep, Colleen and Meg.

UP ON THE ROOF

The actual building used for Wentworth exteriors was the Channel 10 studios, and they seemed to have realised quite quickly what an asset the roof area was. It was used for filming as early as (11) when Franky climbs up there to commit suicide and is talked down by Karen. This is recalled years later when Daphne stands at the roof edge and is talked down by Nora (553). Another pairing is Martha Eaves taking Vera hostage up to the roof (54) and Rita and Alice dangling Joan Ferguson over the edge (623). There are three rooftop protests, the first two organised by Judy (121) and (419); the last by Kath Maxell (667). During the great fire, Bea, Joan and Paddy are rescued by helicopter from the roof (327).

VERA'S MEN

Those trying to neutralise Vinegar Vera with honeyed words are:-

Graham Lang, George Lucas, Damien Travena and Terry Harrison

VICTIMS

The three women murdered by David Bridges are One, Two and Three.

The two women murdered by Neil Murray are One and Two.

WASHBASIN BLUES

To have one inmate drowned inside the prison (Bella Albrecht) may be regarded as a misfortune. To have two drowned (Paddy Lawson) begins to look like carelessness.

WHAT'S MY LINE?

The winners of the award for the most unusual job title listed in the credit sequences are as follows (tears open envelope):-

Winner, Second place, Third place

WHODUNNITS

Due to the sensitive nature of this topic, no-one has yet been able to find the time to write anything on it. But I understand that someone is working on it and an entry will appear in due course.

WHOREHOUSES

Usually the brothels seen in "Prisoner" are gloomy interiors with black walls or dark flock wallpaper and tons of gilt. Examples of this are Pearl's place where Ros Coulson seeks refuge (73), Doris' massage parlour (171) and Queenie Marshall's place (572). Mabel Morgan is a more homely madam and her place is more like a suburban semi (600)-(602).

WIGS

Among many memorable wigs throughout the series are those worn or sold by Janice and a Shop Assistant. My favourite though is the wonderful Bea Smith wig worn by Joyce Barry after her brain surgery, which is apparently later used by Kath Maxwell as a disguise during her escape.

WOODRIDGE

Woodridge is first mentioned in (315) when Tony Berman tells Judy about a benefit concert for the halfway house and suggests the women become involved. Woodridge is seen during rehearsals and for the concert itself (318)-(322). The women return to Woodridge very soon afterwards when Wentworth is closed for repairs after the fire (327)-(332). Other mentions:-

  • Lainie worries that Alan/Ellen will be sent to Woodridge (355).
  • The women are to be transferred to Woodridge again when there is a bomb scare (387)
  • David Bridges is transferred from Woodridge (408)
  • Officers at Barnhurst, Woodridge and Blackmoor have joined the officers' strike (475)
  • Len Murphy is transferred from Woodridge (493)
  • Three male prisoners from Woodridge are moved to Wentworth for their own safety (499)
  • Geoff Macrae tells Len he knows he killed a prisoner called Kevin Wilson in Woodridge (502) and tells the police about it (511) to make it look worse for Len after Pixie's rape.
  • Extra officers are drafted from Woodridge after a riot (601).
