  • Sonia tells Reb she hopes she doesn't expect her to cover the bets she took on the snooker game: Judy teases Reb by suggesting it's not surprising she lost, as Cass's Uncle Eddie was Eddie Charlton. Rick comes round next morning still tied up in the back of a car in the junkyard. Myra feels guilty for hitting Kay (when did she do that?) Work starts at the junkyard and the car Rick was in goes into the crusher. Ann has a staff shortage: Joan has taken leave to visit her father and Rick hasn't turned in. Reb tries to back out of paying up on the bets on the grounds that Cass was coached by a professional, but Judy lets her know it was only a joke. Rick comes round again in a hotel room: Eddie has rescued him. Eddie tells Rick to forget what he saw. The VJ gives Reb an extra six months: Mo gets an extra month for slapping Joan and tells the women later that Joan didn't give evidence in person because she has taken time off work. Cass takes to heart Reb and Sonia's comments about her singing voice and decides to drop out of the glee club group. Alan goes to see Bill and gets a punch in the mouth for interfering. Myra explains to Judy that she can't take over Driscoll as her family problems take first place. Helen and the others take advantage of Joan's absence to taunt Sonia. The women find Cass in the rec room with ruined pianola rolls in her hands: she claims not to have done the damage. Stan walks in and is obviously shocked and hurt by the vandalism. Kay overhears Myra's casual threat to kill Bill. Rick goes looking for Eddie: he is told to keep his nose out. Minnie finds that the piano part of the piano still works so the Glee Club can continue their rehearsals. Mo hears that Susan Jordan has been caught for the cat burglaries: Judy is worried that she will not be released even so. Camilla offers Mo a job looking after her flat. Meg speculates that since Pixie hasn't been traced, something might have happened to her: given Pixie's trusting nature, she may even have been abducted. Mo is told she has to serve two weeks of the extra month, so Camilla phones up her own radio program to tell Mo's story on air. Meg hears the radio and stops the call. Ann is told that Camilla, not Mo, is to be released as a result. Myra comes home to find Bill and Gloria in the lounge: Bill tells her he's moving back into the family home and is bringing Gloria with him. Rick reports to Inspector Maynard that he's seen Eddie in suspicious negotiations with associates of Fellowes, but is told no action will be taken. After Rick leaves, we see that Eddie has been listening in the next room, and comments that Rick's novelty is a dangerous quality. During an argument, Myra is horrified when Bill remarks that Gloria could teach Kay a few (sexual) tricks and hits him with a handy wine bottle: he falls and hits his head on the fireplace. Kay sees the whole thing.

    EPISODE 432

Broadcast on Channel 5 Saturday 26 December 1998 04:40 While the women prepare a nasty surprise for Sonia, a poisonous intruder slithers into Wentworth. Reb gets a fitting punishment for sabotaging the pianola.

  • Myra waits for the police to arrive. Alan says he and Kay will back her up and say she struck out in self-defence. Colleen is against the Glee Club applying for a singing competition. Myra is questioned by the police. Cass volunteers to put her farmyard experience to use and do the animal noises for "Old MacDonald". Reb offhandedly admits to Minnie that she ruined the pianola. Sonia finds her bed sheet slashed. Kay's statement to the police about what she saw and heard makes it look bad for Myra. Reb is treacle and feathered as a punishment for vandalising Stan's pianola . Colleen is alone in her opposition to the Glee Club trip at a staff meeting: Ann coldly reminds them all that it will ultimately her decision. Colleen tells Meg privately that she's so fed up she's looking for another job. Sonia tells Rick she got the information on Eddie from Meryl. The Department refuse Ann's request for permission for the Glee Club to attend the singing competition. Myra sees Ann after being inducted and Meg offers to visit Alan and Kay to make sure they are all right. Mo and Camilla are released, in Mo's case because the VJ's decision was reversed by order of the Department. Reb asks Phyllis to get her into the singing group, but Phyllis demands to be in on it if she's planning to escape. Rick visits Meryl after her release: she asks him to come back later to give her time to get rid of a non-existent "friend" (which probably means customer). Reb apologises to Stan to suck up to him as a way of getting into the singing group: he tells her she can join as far as he's concerned, but the women will have to agree to it. Rick returns to find two thugs waiting for him, who have been called by Meryl. He gets away but the gunmen shoot Meryl (which they probably would have done anyway). The Department changes tack and gives approval for the Glee Club's trip: Colleen asks for her disagreement to be officially recorded. Reb talks Cass round, and Judy follows suit. Ann tells Rick the police have complained to the Department about his investigations, so he must not interfere any more, even though she has been given no actual details of what he is supposed to have done. Cass thanks Stan for sticking up for her to Meg, after she has overheard the two of them discussing the killing of the officer at Barnhurst. A snake approaches Cass as she works in the garden. Sonia finds a dummy hanging in her cell with a note reading GUESS WHO DIDN'T PAY UP? (... but who put it there?). Rick has little sympathy and tells Sonia that Meryl has been killed, and the heavies would have killed him too. Cass inadvertently carries the snake inside in an old doctor's bag she uses to transport a pot plant Stan has said she can keep in her cell. Colleen is forced to go on the Glee Club trip when Ann tells her she wants a senior officer to go with the women. Cass bumps into Colleen and is put on a charge so she can't go on the trip: Stan persuades her to drop the charge. Rick tells Meg he saw who killed Meryl but he is going to deal with it in his own way as he doesn't know who he can trust in the police any more. Rick ignores Sonia's claim to have heard something moving around in her cell and locks her in for the night: the snake has made its way under a sink unit - but in whose cell?

    EPISODE 433

Broadcast on Channel 5 Sunday 27 December 1998 04:40 Two women become the victims of a poisonous snake at Wentworth. Colleen's family are at the mercy of Rick's enemies.

  • Next morning Sonia asks Rick to check her cell, claiming to have heard something moving in the night and accuses the women of putting something in her cell. Kay refuses to believe Alan when he tries to tell her what her father was really like and refuses to change her statement to the police. Reb won't help Sonia by trying to find out who is tormenting her. Meanwhile, the snake moves on down the corridor from Sonia's cell . Sonia is scared by a hosepipe planted by Bobbie and Phyllis when picking up the laundry from one of the cells: she demands that Rick finds out who is doing this to her. Reb phones "Uncle" Kevin to give him details of the Glee Club outing. Meg looks in on Alan and Kay. Kay is hostile and suspects she is there at Myra's request to try to persuade her to change her statement. Kevin phones the minibus company pretending to be from Wentworth and finds out when the bus is leaving from there. Stan gives Bobbie back her mended Walkman, complete with a new tape from the Acoustic Chewies. Reb has to palm Phyllis off with as little information on the escape as she can get away with. Helen goes back to her cell to pick up her cigarettes and is bitten by the snake, and so is Meg when she goes to help her. Sonia starts laughing hysterically when Judy tells the women about the snake. Helen suffers more from the snake bite than Meg as she got most of the venom as the first to be bitten. She is transferred to hospital. Colleen tells Rick that Patrick is setting up his own garage business: he offers to be his first customer. Myra comes out of solitary and meets Judy in the laundry. Sarah Webster visits Reb to ask her to move the suitcase she left in her charge. Bobbie recovers the dead snake from the garbage. Ann challenges Colleen over her negative attitude to the Glee Club trip. The women present Stan with a retirement cake and he makes an emotional speech. One of the Fellowes gang follows Rick on foot to his house and plants a bomb under Rick's car. Judy has a chat with Myra, who is depressed that she will be in jail for the rest of her life and be unable to affect what happens to Kay. Sonia is locked in for the night and finds the dead snake draped over the clothes in her wardrobe: next morning she is found crouching on top of the sink unit in a trance. Patrick uses Rick's car to give the kids a lift to school. Rick receives a warning call about the bomb, but too late to stop the car exploding , killing Colleen's family .

  • Colleen runs to the door when she hears the explosion and is devastated to see what has happened. Sonia is taken to the infirmary in a state of shock. Ann considers cancelling the trip but Meg argues that non-one in the singing group need have been involved in trying to scare Sonia. Kevin phones the bus driver, telling him his daughter has been kidnapped. To have her released, he must stall the bus at a particular point. Rick tells the police he thinks Eddie Stevens was on the take and it was him who made the tip-off call. The police point out how illogical and inconsistent his story is, but Rick argues that Eddie couldn't have known about the bomb unless he was involved. Colleen pulls up the police officer interviewing Rick for telling him he was "lucky" - unlike her own family, whose fate he is shrugging off as just "unlucky". Ann and Meg agree that Sonia's complete collapse is difficult to understand. Rick phones Ann to tell her about Colleen's family. Meg has to take Colleen's place on the bus, and Joyce stands in for Rick: they are told they must be armed. Rick drives Colleen home: she tries to dismiss his insistence that she shouldn't go into the house on her own to collect documents, but finds she can't go through with it and he has to go in for her. The bus driver stops the bus as arranged pretending there is something wrong with the engine and the women are let off. Judy and Minnie stop Reb from getting away, and the driver is forced to drive on when Cass offers to help fix the engine. Kevin follows the bus. Rick takes Colleen to stay with Meg as she still has keys from the last time she lived there. Colleen refuses to see a doctor and is bewildered that she is unable to feel anything about her bereavement. The women arrive at the Church Hall for the contest, and the driver is concerned to know how soon they will be setting off back again. Ann points out the consequences of Rick's interference for Colleen's family. Bobbie tells one woman at the competition that Joyce is an axe murderer. Helen comes out of the infirmary and tells Myra that worrying about her kids isn't going to help either her or them. Myra reveals that Gloria originally came to her for help and she let her stay with her family as she had nowhere else to go. Sonia sees Dr Weissman: she blames Joan for leaving the snake in her cell to kill her. She also digs into her past and tells him about the death of her baby. The driver gets a message to Reb , which was left under the wheel of the vehicle by Kevin, along with some sleeping pills. Another group at the singing competition do a better job with "Old MacDonald". Alan visits and tells Myra that Kay has moved in with Gloria. The officers are given a flask of coffee for the trip back, which Reb dopes with the pills. Ann calls in to see Colleen and offer her condolences, advising her to express her feelings not bottle them up. Colleen thanks her through gritted teeth. The officers and the driver fall asleep: Reb leaves the bus and Minnie and Bobbie follow her. Phyllis arms herself with Meg's gun, but is outsmarted by Reb and Kevin driving off without her, so she takes the driver's daughter, Cheryl, hostage at gunpoint .

  • Doreen's list of possible Wentworth re-entry tactics include some she didn't get round to, like "MUGGING" and "DANGEROUS DRIVING".

Judy tries to wake Meg. Joan returns to work and is warned not to take revenge for her father's kidnapping. Judy and Cass get lost following Phyllis. Joan gloats over Sonia in the infirmary and hints she should keep a look-out for more snakes. Sonia begs Myra for help when she comes into the infirmary to deliver her meal. Doreen returns to visit her old pals , but Helen is the only one left. Sonia assures Ann she is feeling well enough to go back with the women, and asks to share with Myra. Doreen tells Helen she is getting married to a friend so he can stay in Australia: Helen inadvertently gives her the idea of getting back inside to avoid her prospective fiance, who is getting too serious. Meg comes round and phones Ann to say all the women have escaped. Ann immediately phones the police. Doreen sees Joan as she is leaving and is amazed how she could ever have forgotten she was at Wentworth. Cass and Judy find a tin hut in the woods. Myra agrees to share with Sonia, and thinks she may be able to help her. Helen passes on the news to Myra about the singing group's failure to return, but is disappointed by Myra's willingness to help Sonia. Sonia tells Myra about her lover Nick who punched her in the stomach when she was seven months pregnant after she refused to have an abortion. Meg persuades Colleen to see her doctor when she says she can't face her own. Bobbie and Minnie wake up in a haycart : Minnie agrees to let Bobbie have one day on the outside before they turn themselves in. Joan can hardly disguise her delight that Ann and Meg are in trouble with the Department over the escape and comments acidly that it's just as well there are a few people around who know how to do their job. Probably for lack of anyone else to do so, Ruth pipes up with an opinion for once, as says she's disgusted with the women who've escaped. Judy's pace-maker starts to go wrong: Cass leaves her to try to get to a phone, but returns at gunpoint when Phyllis arrives at the hut with Cheryl. Phyllis sends Cass off to get money and food. Minnie lifts a man's wallet, but he only has 3 dollars in cash. Reb knocks Kevin out and continues alone, transferring to a stolen motorbike when she hears there's a road block ahead. Doreen tells Helen she's going to try going back inside. Reb drives past a police officer who recognises the bike as stolen and gives chase. Minnie and Bobbie win money on the bingo and decide to spend it on drink. Doreen solicits outside a police station, but still can't get arrested. Minnie and Bobbie get a taxi back to Wentworth, still drunk. Sonia finds a doll on her bed, put there by Joan: Myra arrives and threatens Joan, slamming her against a locker and grabbing her in a choke hold.
