Meg explains to Erica that she thinks they should play Joan at her own game: if she pretends to be involved in corrupt activities herself, Joan would inevitably be drawn to collude with her. Erica reminds her that as someone who has just served a prison sentence on a matter of principle, she would hardly be the most likely candidate to appear to be corrupt, and tells Meg that she could not agree to any such plan unless the details were better thought out. The women are surprised to see Lizzie brought back to the laundry, but Lizzie says she'll get another chance at parole. Bea challenges Joan when she tries to take away Maxine's buyup for a cheeky remark, and Joan has to content herself with sneering at Maxine's mother's disappointment in her at her visit. Tony brings a couple of new residents to the halfway house, prostitutes Trixie and Francine : they immediately complain that there's no television. Steve offers to arrange work release for Bea before her parole hearing: Bea rightly suspects that she must be expected to do something in return. Later on, Bea tells Faye to warn her when she next makes a killing on the book. An old woman arrives at the halfway house with her cage birds looking for a room. Bea finds out that Faye has enough money to give Joan a cut of the profits. Steve catches Faye doing her accounts but rather than confiscate the take, he takes a cut for himself. When Faye tries to protest later on that Steve has taken her money, none of the women believe her, but Bea takes the money Faye was saving as Joan's cut just as she is about to pay up. Joan slaps Faye around until Faye tells her to ask Steve if she doesn't believe her story. Trixie and Francine complain to Tony about the noise made by Beryl's birds. At morning muster, Maxine is told she's leaving as her father has paid her fine, but in reception she finds he did not stay long enough to see her. Joan notices that Barbara isn't on laundry duty as allocated: the women tell her Barbara has been allowed to work in reception and hint to Joan that she must have done Steve some favour or other... Meanwhile, Neil is taking Chrissie off the cleaning duties that Joan gave her and Tina as a punishment so he can have a chat with her in the surgery. Joan notices another absentee and storms off to the infirmary, nearly catching Chrissie and Neil about to engage in a bit of discreet snogging. Joan tells Neil she doesn't give a damn if he wants to screw around with sluts, but she won't put up with anyone who undermines her orders. Margo upsets Paddy and she refuses to see Dr Weissman. Tony visits Wentworth to see Tina to try to get her to come to the halfway house after her release. Dr Weissman tricks Paddy into seeing him in the garden as a visitor, and persuades her to resume her treatment. Meg pushes Margo up against a wall and orders her to stay away from Paddy. Joan catches Bea in Helen's cell helping her to pack up and picks on Helen, forcing her to apologise or face a charge and lose her release that day. After Joan has sent Helen to reception, Bea tells Joan that all the women call her "The Freak": from her reaction she appears not to know this already, and she retaliates by telling Bea she regards her as her own "special project". Tina and Helen are released as Joan and Neil leave work. After going out for a meal to celebrate, Helen and Tina split up: Helen goes home but Tina goes back on the streets where she is attacked and killed by the black gloved killer . Joan makes snide remarks to Colleen about Steve "helping" the women, and hints at a financial motive for his interest. Det Thorne arrives to interview the women about Tina's murder, and shows Colleen a black glove found by Tina's body . She identifies it as Joan's from the initials "JF" inside.

  • The police ask to search Joan's locker, and Colleen has to ask them to hold off until Joan can be present. When they ask Joan about the gloves, she tells them they went missing earlier the same day. She protests her innocence, but cannot give a proper alibi, as went home alone and stayed there all night. Neil blunders into the staff room during the interview. Joan agrees to come to the police station later to make a statement. Bea amazes Chrissie by offering to get her a packet of cigarettes outside the buyup at normal price: Chrissie promptly orders a whole carton. Helen visits the halfway house to see Judy: Tony thinks she's wanting a room. Beryl arrives with birdcage in hand, amd Tony notices after she's gone to her room that her canary seems to changed colour. Joan catches Barbara reading her papers in her cell and confiscates them : she demands that Barbara spies on Bea and Steve to find out what they are planning. Meg visits the halfway house and notices a very loud chorus of birds chirruping: Beryl's room is searched and found to be full of bird-cages. Joan makes a statement and tells Insp Thorne she is being set up, as the clue left was so obvious. He reminds her that she has no proper alibi and that if the gloves were stolen there would have been very little opportunity to have them smuggled out. Barbara passes on to Bea what she's heard about Joan being interviewed by the police. In return, Bea lets Barbara know she's arranging a special delivery and can order whatever she likes. Helen is attacked in the hallway of her flat: her attacker runs away before she can see who it is. Insp Thorne tells Joan he is sure Helen's attacker was a man - and anyway Joan was being followed so the police know exactly where she was at the time of the attack - but isn't convinced the incident is connected to the murders, so she is still under suspicion. Chrissie is on sick call yet again when Colleen brings Inspector Thorne to interview Neil: he produces a cinema ticket as an alibi. Colleen leaves Chrissie outside the infirmary, so she is able to overhear about the attack on Helen and the identity of the second victim. Chrissie passes on the information to Bea and Bea hands over her cigarettes. Joan catches Chrissie with some of the contraband cigarettes, and later comes across a deliberately staged meeting between Bea and Steve, where she hands over some money to him. Steve takes the money to Erica, who reiterates that she doesn't think the plot against Joan is very ethical. Bea tells the women to create a disturbance in the dining room while Steve is the only officer on duty. Maxine goes to visit her mother at the service station. Colleen breaks up the arranged food fight in the dining room, and Erica cancels buyup. Margo is puzzled at Bea's lack of concern at losing buyup. Maxine's father tells her he only paid her bail so she could attend her sister's wedding: Maxine leaves in disgust, saying she'll pay back the money when she can. Bea promises to get goods in if the women will place their orders. Erica suggests a placement for Beryl as housekeeper with some friends of hers in the country. Dr Weissman hypnotises Paddy to help her remember what happened at the party. Maxine returns to the halfway house. Paddy tells Bea she couldn't remember what she said under hynosis until Dr. Weissman played back the tape. Insp Thorne finds out that Tony visited both Penny and Tina and goes to interview him. He arrives at the halfway house just as Maxine and Tony are having a snog, but when he interviews Tony he seems confused and evasive.

Judy returns from her trip to Sydney and meets Francine, one of the new residents. Tony tells Judy he's prime suspect for the murders. Joan demands information from Barbara about the incident in the dining room, and is told that Bea's not afraid of losing buyup, from which Joan concludes that Steve is dealing with Bea. Bea tells Margo to run the book in Faye's place, but that she will be taking a cut herself not Joan. Joan asks for a few hours off to make enquiries to clear herself of suspicion over the murders. Helen visits Judy and tells her about the attack on her. Joan also arrives at the halfway house and tells Judy and Helen that she suspects Tony. Judy shows Joan the door and threatens to report her to the police for harassment. Chrissie fakes a stomach ache to get Colleen to give her permission to go to sickbay. Helen suggests to Judy that she ought not to be so trusting of Tony. Judy tells her she is just upset after the attack and offers to let Helen stay in the halfway house if she's scared of going back to her flat. Neil promises Chrissie he will find a way to get her out. Joan forces Barbara to inform on Chrissie to Colleen. Joan asks if she can have a word with Chrissie herself, but Colleen says she'd rather they were sure of the facts first. Maxine goes for an interview as a child-minder at the Dempsters: she hits it off immediately with the the little girl, Michelle, but after Maxine leaves it is clear that the Dempsters' marriage is in trouble . Joan wants to know how much Neil is paying Chrissie for her services as a "third rate whore", but she really only wants to get more information about Neil. Chrissie tells Bea that Joan has been trying to push her to lag on Neil. Bea advises her to keep an eye on both of them and tells Chrissie the Freak's days are numbered. Faye wants to know why Margo is running the book: Bea warns her to shut up and accept it. Paddy is hypnotised by Dr Weissman , and remembers childhood , including her mother's mistreatment of her and how she was shut in cupboard for hours on end. Joan demands her cut from Faye, and is told that Margo is now running the book. Meg and Steve make Joan suspicious by talking about the women having unauthorised buyup goods. Joan demands her cut from Margo , and implies it was Paddy who told her that Margo had taken over the book. Dr Weissman tells the classification meeting about Paddy's breakthrough, but says that she will need support and anything that destroys her self-confidence could set back her recovery. Joan confronts Bea in front of the other women and accuses her of dealing with Steve. Bea denies it and challenges her to prove it. Margo tricks Paddy into going into the rec room store cupboard and locks her in.

  • The script includes references to Butterfield's Plant Nursery and Lyn Warner, as well as a hint of the similarity of Sally's story to the previous child abuse plotline involving Gail Summers

After taunting Paddy with being afraid of the dark, Margo lets her out of the store room when she hears her talking to her mother. Joan walks into the rec room just as Paddy is attacking Margo, and she takes them both off to Erica's office, where the classification meeting with Dr Weissman is just finishing. Paddy lags on Margo for locking her in, and Margo is sent to solitary. Dr Weissman seems to regard Paddy's admission that she deliberately hit Margo rather than lashing out blindly as an indication that her cure is on track. Chrissie tells Neil that Joan knows about them: he tells her he will amend her medical records to justify her visits. Bea wonders where Margo has got to and Paddy tells her she's been sent to solitary, but seems somehow to escape Bea's wrath over the lagging. Erica asks Neil why Chrissie is paying so many visits to the infirmary: he brandishes the (presumably amended) file and says he suspects Chrissie may have a gynaecological problem, perhaps a cyst, and would like her to have further tests. Sally feels under pressure at home and decides to hire Maxine to look after Michelle despite her husband's disapproval. When Lizzie puts her on the spot, Bea tells her the details of the plan to frame Joan, but tells Lizzie to keep it quiet. Maxine goes to work at the Dempsters' and immediately notices a bruise on Michelle's arm: Sally says she's very accident prone and fell downstairs. Joan approaches Steve with a proposal to split his "profits": he tells Bea next morning, and she gives him a payoff to pass on to Joan to cement the deal. Bea tells him the best person to pass it on to Joan would be Barbara, as Joan already suspects that he and Barbara are having an affair. Sally is disappointed when Peter refuses to take her with him on a business trip, even though they now have Maxine to look after Michelle. Later on, Sally reaches breaking point and nearly throws a pot of boiling coffee over Michelle. Meg offers Bea some options for work release, but Bea says she is happy to wait until she hears what Steve has managed to arrange for her. While Sally is out shopping (and nearly shop-lifting), Maxine calls the doctor for Michelle as she has a temperature. Steve tells Bea he's arranged a placement with a local newspaper: Chrissie makes a snide remark and Lizzie confides in Bea that she's not the only one who thinks Bea has sold out. Dr Kelly examines Michelle and he finds the recent bruises along with some older ones. Sally arrives home and is annoyed that Maxine called in the doctor, and sends her home. The doctor talks to Sally privately and lets her know that he suspects her of hitting Michelle. Erica archly denies any knowledge of the plot against Joan when Bea mentions it during her interview about job release. Meg advises Maxine to report Sally if she has any evidence that Michelle is being maltreated. Neil finds out (again!) about Chrissie's record for prostitution from Meg and Steve. Barbara overhears Bea and Lizzie discussing the plot against Joan. Chrissie is examined by a doctor and is sent to hospital for tests. Neil tells her it will give them the opportunity to spend a few hours together. Barbara offers information to Joan in return for her papers. Armed with the information, Joan goes to Erica and reports Steve and Colleen for stealing goods from the buyup and selling them back to the women .

Bea calls the Gate Guard "Mr Williams" as she passes the gatehouse.

Joan offers to help with the investigation and adds that Colleen and Meg are probably involved along with Steve: Erica tells her the matter must be kept between the two of them for now. Judy gets a letter giving permission to open the house and the shop. Steve tells Bea her work release has been approved: Joan interrupts to tell Steve to report to the Governor's office, where the conspirators are arguing about what to do next. Steve can't understand how Joan outsmarted them, but Erica says this is now irrelevant as Ted Douglas is expected at any moment and Joan has got in before them and already filed her report. Maxine confronts Sally about hitting Michelle and is given the sack. Ted Douglas arrives in response to Joan's report: he is annoyed that Erica didn't tell him before going ahead with the plot. Steve accuses Barbara of showing Joan the requisition form that confirmed her suspicion of a set-up, then has to tell Bea of the failure of the plot against Joan. Bea goes for her first day on the outside on work release. Judy tells Tony that the Woodridge prisoners are giving a benefit for the halfway house, and that she intends to ask Erica if the Wentworth women can be involved. Tony suggests to Maxine that she should contact the Child Protection Society about Michelle. Sally visits the halfway house with Michelle to ask Maxine to come back to work for her. Joan hands Barbara's papers over to her, but tells her she is keeping a copy as insurance in case Barbara ever feels like telling anyone how she helped her by passing on information about the plot. Chrissie is taken for tests, having worked out with Neil a plan to slip away from the hospital for a few hours together. Steve hands Erica his resignation and a statement admitting full responsibility: Erica has to accept, but says she is sorry to see him go, and will ask the Department if he can finish the week rather than leave immediately. Bea is introduced to her work mates in the print-shop , and meets Cookie, who will keep an eye on her and show her the job. Neil phones the hospital and the police station to find out the name of the policewoman accompanying Chrissie, and then leaves work. Posing as a doctor, he calls the real doctor and the policewoman away from Chrissie's room. Bea snaps at Cookie for asking too many questions about her private life, but apologises immediately. Chrissie changes in a storeroom and meets Neil outside in the hospital car park. Steve prepares to leave, and while recovering a tape recorder he lent Neil, he finds Joan's other glove underneath it in a cupboard in the sickbay. Erica is told and she contacts the police. Neil's absence from the prison is noticed just as the hospital ring up to report Chrissie missing from the hospital: Steve makes the connection and suggests that Chrissie's accomplice must have been Neil. Neil drives Chrissie out to a house in the country. When she says she wants to go back or she will get into trouble, he tells her not to worry as no-one is going to catch her. When Chrissie insists, Neil turns nasty and accuses her of "getting her legs apart for anyone with money". He tells her that those who seek the "wages of sin" will surely find what they seek ... and the wage of sin is death .
