  • Another cameo from Kate Jason as a prisoner seeing Greg about her burns.

The opening mugshot sequence returns to its previous lineup of Karen, Lyn and Bea.

Bea tries to convince Marilyn that Eddie will visit her again. Karen seeks out Greg to talk to him about her mother's visit, which she found upsetting (especially after her mother called her a murderer). Greg finds the name of Karen's solicitor was Henry (...not Charles?) Baldwin and says that will go and talk to him about the retrial. Doreen panics when she sees a uniformed police officer and she and Franky hide, but noticing they have hidden in the grounds of a convent gives her an idea. Eddie turns up to visit Marilyn in a suit complaining that he hasn't found a job yet. Greg makes an appointment to see Mr Baldwin's junior partner Steven Wilson as a lawyer for Karen. Doreen and Franky disguise themselves as nuns and seeing a collecting tin for "DESERTED MOTHERS REFUGE" they decide to steal the tin to collect some "alms" ... for themselves. Jean reports back to Mum that she hadn't been able to get anything out of Judith-Anne, but tells her she can ask for herself as Judith-Anne is waiting to see her. Mum sees Judith-Anne in the visiting room and asks her what is wrong: she tells Mum she is pregnant and that she wants to have the baby despite her mother's objections. Steve Wilson is initially sceptical about taking on Karen's case and tells Greg he will have to speak to her first before he agrees. Vera tells Bea there's a new prisoner who has been put to share her cell. The newcomer is so boisterous in the shower that Vera has to give the officer in charge a hand. Bea and the new prisoner Monica Ferguson disappoint Vera by turning out to be old friends: in fact they used to be cellmates in the "old prison". Vera catches Greg and Karen kissing in the surgery. Monica Ferguson tells Bea and Lizzie that she's back inside for bashing her husband. Greg has to defend himself to Erica after Vera reports what she saw and so he is forced to tell Erica that he and Karen were engaged. Erica tells him she will overlook the incident as long as he won't see Karen alone again. Monica's snoring keeps Bea and Marilyn awake. A lonely old pensioner's story while they are collecting gives Franky an idea for how to make more money. Steve Wilson visits Karen to hear her side of the story and finds out from her the name of her husband's girlfriend. She is upset by his personal line of questioning but he points out she will have to put up with the same or worse at any retrial. Jean urges Erica to put forward Mum's case for reconsideration by the parole board. Erica decides that Greg and Karen must not be left alone together. Monica and Bea agree to make up and try to act friendly. When Bea finds out that Monica owns a milk bar in Brighton, and that it's closed up, she becomes very interested. Erica warns Karen she will replace Greg if there's any further contact between them. Lynn returns to Wentworth on remand: Meg let sher know her disappointed she is to see her again. Franky and Doreen spot a house with a unkempt garden and establish that the owner, Mrs McBride, doesn't get many visitors and hasn't seen any of her family for months. They are invited in for a cup of tea and Franky pulls a blunt weapon from her sleeve.

  • Prisoners 1 & 2 don't do much for their credit other than holding a hand of cards.

Doreen stops Franky coshing Miss McBride in time when she returns from the kitchen just after Miss McBride has confessed she has a little money hidden about the house. Bea tries to "persuade" Monica that she should let Marilyn and Eddie run her shop while she is inside, but she says she doesn't trust "crims or their boyfriends". Vera tells Karen she'll be keeping an eye on her now she knows what she's up to with Greg, telling her she's no better than a whore if she uses her body to get what she wants. Doreen is more patient with Miss McBride's rambling stories than Franky is, and Miss McBride is so pleased with their company that they are invited to stay. Bea wakes Monnie up by shoving a pillow over her face and insists that she should at least meet Eddie before she dismisses the idea. Mum gets parole, with Jean as her parole officer and she has found a flat for her and Judith-Anne. Steve Wilson tells Karen he has interviewed some of her neighbours who can support her story. Eddie thinks Monica's proposal is a practical joke and angrily refuses. Lizzie reads a medical book and is convinced she has cancer ... of the elbow. Vera gives Karen and Marilyn extra cleaning duties for nothing, but Meg tries to hint that she's being far too harsh. Bea and Monnie trap Vera in their cell and set her up for bashing Monnie and Lizzie helps to get Meg to witness it. Erica suspects that it is a setup, but nevertheless orders Vera to take a few days off until the matter is settled. Bea threatens to dob Monnie in for the set-up on Vera if she doesn't give Marilyn and Eddie another chance and let them run her shop, so she agrees. Vera signs off in tears, upset that Meg wouldn't believe her story. Mum and Marilyn are released: no party this time, just a jolly pep talk from Erica. Doreen decides to tell Miss McBride who she and Franky are, but she says she has known all along who they are, and wants them to stay as long as they like. Steve Wilson comes under pressure from Jean to talk to Lynn, but his advice is so negative that she slashes her wrists in despair with a fragment of broken mirror . Karen is moved in with Bea and Monnie as there are new prisoners arriving. She and Meg discover Lynn bleeding when she goes to collect her things.

  • One confusing incident in this episode is Franky writing a letter to Karen . Is she supposed to be able to write but not to read? Or has Karen done such a good job teaching her in such a short time?

Some of the "jazz" playing on Miss McBride's windup gramophone is of a much later vintage than the 78 era: distinctly "cool" in fact, with prominent vibraphone.

Greg rushes to help Lynn and manages to staunch the bleeding until she can be taken to hospital. Erica's niece Barbara is brought to Wentworth for drug smuggling : she tells her she ought to keep quiet about who she is if she values her safety. Barbara naively ignores Erica's advice and brags to the women that Erica will help her get out as she is her aunt. Jean is appalled by the news about Lynn and blames herself for not noticing Lynn's state of mind. Bea presses Barbara to see if she can persuade Erica to have the rec room TV replaced. Over dinner at Meg's, Jean shifts the blame to Steve. Bea tells Karen her story: she claimed at her trial to have hit [not strangled as in the flashback in (200)] her husband's girlfriend in a fit of temper after an argument rather than as the premeditated act it was to get herself a lighter sentence. It was at the beach where he caught her husband ("John" in this version, not the "Harry" of episode (2)...) behind the sheds carrying on with an ex-colleague of hers. While Bea was inside, her daughter Debbie got into drugs and eventually died of an overdose. Bea was not even allowed to go to the funeral. Bea jokingly warns Officer Manson not to discipline Barbara as the Governor has ordered she is to be treated differently. Barbara gets a dressing down from Erica then lies to Bea about taking full responsibility (whereas she'd actually dobbed in both Bea and Monica). Barbara gets Lizzie to tell her the details of a similar set-up Bea and Monnie had carried out against another officer years ago. Jean confronts Steve with the news of Lynn's suicide attempt but he shrugs it off and refuses to accept any responsibility for it. Barbara passes the information she learnt from Lizzie on to Erica to try to get in her good books again and Erica warns her about the prisoners' usual attitude to "laggers". Erica questions Bea, Monica and Doreen about their previous frame-up on an officer called Miss Watson. Erica decides to move Monica out of Bea's cell to avoid them cooking up any other plans and to reinstate Vera immediately. Miss McBride celebrates her 71st birthday and wants a party, but Franky and Doreen have no-one to invite. Steve sees some potential witnesses for Karen's retrial: her husband's girlfriend and her doctor. The latter is more help, revealing that Karen was pregnant when she came to see him and is shocked that she is no longer so, as he cannot believe she would have had an abortion. Vera demands that Meg should tell her who talked so that she could get her job back: Meg nods across the rec room to indicate Barbara. Greg confirms to Steve that Karen wanted children so much that she would never have had an abortion. Karen reluctantly agrees to tell Steve the whole story and tells him that she only had an abortion after her husband demanded she had one and beat her until she agreed. Mrs McBride gets a rare visit from her nephew Trevor: he recognizes Franky and Doreen and sneaks out into the hallway to call the police. Franky and Doreen bundle Trevor into a cupboard and go on the run again.

  • Miss McBride is not in this episode and is credited in error.

Schoolgirl Sarah Roberts is given a lift from school by a man who claims to know her father, but he drives her to a deserted country road and rapes her. What has all this to do with Wentworth?, we ask, but we will just have to wait and see. Barbara tells Vera that Monnie has asked her to smuggle some goods in, though she isn't sure what they are: she is to make a phone call to a friend of Monica's and ask for the delivery of her "special things". Instead of phoning a friend of Monica's, Barbara phones her own friend Alice and asks for a parcel to be delivered but addressed to her. This cleverly means that Vera will have to let the parcel through and catch Barbara handing it over to Monica. Vera and Jean clash over Jean's concern to see whether there is a letter for Lynn to cheer her up in hospital: Vera dismisses Lynn as a "waste of time". Sarah's mother is shown on the phone to a friend (the connection established by having her gazing at a huge photo of Sarah on top of her escritoire ): she worries that Sarah hasn't come home but her husband discourages her from phoning the police. Jean visits Lynn in hospital: at first Lynn ignores her but she manages to get her to talk by asking her how her parents would feel about her suicide attempt. Jean offers to write to her parents for her and insists that Lynn should give Steve Wilson another chance as he still wants to defend her. Sarah's father agrees to phone the police just as she arrives home: she goes straight upstairs claiming she fell over on the way home to explain her bruises. Her parents hear the shower running and call upstairs to Sarah not to take to long. Greg wants to know why Karen didn't tell him about her abortion, and betrays his jealousy that there might be something going on between her and her new lawyer. Steve goes to hospital to interview Lynn in hospital. Jean invites Greg to dinner. Vera pretends to check the parcel for Barbara in reception, which contains a doll in a shoe box. Sarah stays off school and when her father has gone to work, she tells her mother what happened to her. Vera wants to know why Barbara hasn't handed over the parcel: she calims to be just about to plant it in Monica's cell, so Vera will have to think up a reason for a search. Doreen scans the newspaper for jobs and tells Franky to wait for her while she goes and sees if she can get an interview. Vera pretends she has overheard the women talking about escaping, so Erica orders a spot check. Drugs are found in Monnie's cell. A detective and a policewoman interview Sarah at home about the rape: they are disappointed to find that Sarah's mother washed her uniform destroying any possibility of forensic evidence. Vera challenges Barbara for more details for the name of Monica's contact, and wants to know where the rest of the drugs are, as she knows the doll would have held more drugs than were found. Erica reels off a long list of increased security measures to make sure no more drugs get into the prison. Instead of getting a job, Doreen picks up Toddy to have somewhere to stay and comes back to collect Franky. Sarah is upset at the thought of a trial if the man who raped her is caught. Barbara demands Vera should arrange for her to have a colour TV in her cell. Bea announces that she doesn't believe Monica was guilty and says that whoever framed her will be sorry. Sarah's mother Catherine vows to avenge her daughter.

Officer ~ Betty Hargrave (who has two scenes with dialogue)

  • Some of the lighting effects in these early episodes are stronger on atmosphere than on realism: is this corridor supposed to have a glass ceiling with daylight streaming through?

As Erica arrives at work, she reminds the officer who is (for no very good reason) inspecting the fire hose outside reception of the new security arrangements. Vera is caught red-handed scanning the files in Erica's filing cabinet: she claims she is only looking for evidence to back up her hunch that Monica waa framed. Barbara tells Vera she should be grateful to her for giving her the chance to look good in front of "Auntie Erica" and repeats her demand for a TV and asks to be moved out of the laundry. Sarah returns to school, despite her mother's concern that it is too soon. Toddy throws Franky out so he can have a nuzzle with Doreen. Sarah's headmaster phones home to tell her parents that she fainted in assembly, so her mother goes to collect her. Hearing the women speculating, Vera maliciously informs Bea that Barbara is inside for smuggling ... drugs. Sarah's rapist is revealed as Bert Warren, one of her father's employees, nervously scanning a newspaper to see if he has made the news. Bea searches Barbara's locker, suspecting that she must have more drugs hidden somewhere. After hanging around for hours Franky goes back to the rented room for Doreen and sees the bruises on Doreen's face. They decide to leave, but wait until Toddy returns next morning. Franky pretends to want to seduce him but pulls the gun on him, then knocks him out with it. When Lynn returns from hospital, Barbara is moved to share a cell with her. Bea gives Lynn the job of searching Barbara's clothes for drugs, which she does after dark while Barbara is asleep. When Barbara catches her, she claims to be looking for more pills like the ones she had in hospital. Barbara offers to sell her some if she can come up with the cash. Lynn reports back that Barbara is hiding the pills in her bra. Lizzie and Bea forcibly recover them and Bea starts to feed them to Barbara. Barbara's screams draw Meg and Vera to the scene, and Bea taunts them by showing them the drugs they failed to find. Vera brushes off Barbara's appeal for help and warns her not to involve her or she won't protect her from the women. Sarah insists she needs to get out of the house and offers to buy milk from the local shop. While she is there, she sees Bert Warren drive up and phones her mother from the shop. Erica sends Barbara to solitary and reprimands Vera for not checking the parcel thoroughly. Jean surprises Meg with the suggestion that she should solve her own accomodation problems by moving in with Meg. Bert Warren is apparently detained in the shop long enough reading a copy of "Playboy" for Catherine to drive over and arrive as he is leaving. She runs him down and reverses back and forward over him several times just to make sure .

    OTHER CHARACTERS
Frances Taylor (the prisoner with dialogue in the shower scene and in the mail call scene, where she is identified by name)

  • Directed by William Fitzwater
  • I have corrected the obvious mis-spelling "Ian Fprake"

Lizzie, Erica and Bea are not in this episode (thanks Mark Caffrey)

The Receptionist that Jean calls "Sal" gets most of the action in this episode despite being "2" in the credits. She seems to be in charge of handing out mail in reception, where the first prisoner in line is identified as "Mary Bentley" . The officer present says and does nothing.

The next we see of Catherine is her being shown to her (rather oddly shaped ) cell in Wentworth by Meg. We also see her natty uniform style pants suit in its full glory for the first time, complete with brown jacket with cream piping . Meanwhile, Mr Roberts consoles himself at home with Beethoven's "Pastoral" symphony and copious quantities of whisky. Franky and Doreen wake up under a tree where they have spent the night: Franky tells Doreen she has a plan to get them out of their difficulties. Catherine is rudely woken by the morning bell and listens to the sounds of the other women waking up squabbling. Ken Roberts consults Steven Wilson, who agrees to take on his case, but (not very encouragingly) suggests that Catherine could have deliberately killed the prime suspect so that Sarah would not have to go through the ordeal of giving evidence in court. Doreen is not pleased to find that Franky's "plan" involves armed bank robbery, and reminds her that her last girlfriend died in the course of her last bank job. Catherine tells another prisoner off during the morning shower for using her deodorant without asking, while Karen and Lynn discuss being represented by the same lawyer. Catherine little suspects that she too will be one of his customers when she is called from the shower block to see her lawyer. Steve once again does his best to lift the spirits of his client by suggesting to Catherine that Sarah may have seen Bert Warren before and misidentified her attacker, in which case Catherine has killed an innocent man. Karen gets a letter that she thinks intially is from a child due to the handwriting, but when she opens it she finds it is from Franky. When Lynn asks her who her letter was from, she tells her it was Franky and is pleased that she is still trying with her attempts to learn to write. Franky and Doreen stake out the hardware store they plan to rob. Meg gives Jean a key to her flat. Franky decides to make a move on the store, but they hesitate when they see a uniformed policeman. When their hesitation make the policeman suspicious, Franky decides to make a run for it. Franky pulls the gun and wounds a policeman, but he recovers enough to fire at and fatally wound her . As she is dying, Franky urges Doreen to make a run for it while she can, and her last words are "Bloody bastards!" Karen is bitter about not seeing Steve for a long time and accuses him of only caring for his paying clients. When Steve retorts that he is being payed to see her, Karen works out that it must be Greg who is paying. She dismisses Steve and tells Vera she wants to see the doctor. Greg arranges for them to see each other alone, but Karen only wants to tell him it is over between them. Jean chooses this moment to invite Greg over for dinner and he accepts. Karen thinks over her decision to end it with Greg (helped by a lot of flashbacks) and is just thinking about Franky when she decides to turn on the radio just at the moment when an announcer reports that Franky is dead. Doreen goes loopy in the park and lashes out at complete strangers. Catherine is released on bail and is picked up by her husband, who tells her that he has sent Sarah to stay with his sister Vivien. Vera taunts Karen with Greg's interest in Jean and Franky's death. Ken appals Catherine by telling her he thinks Steve might have been right to have suggest that she killed the wrong man. Doreen walks back to Wentworth and asks the gate guard to let her in. She is interviewed by the police: they tell her that Miss McBride doesn't want to press charges, but otherwise she is in a lot of trouble. Steve tells Catherine he wants to plead manslaughter on grounds of temporary insanity, but she looks dubious about the idea. As soon as Doreen sees Karen, she attacks her, yelling that it is her fault that Franky is dead.

Thanks to Mark Faulkner who sent me scans from TV Week at the time of the original showing of an interview with Carol Burns and the front cover.

  • There are several familiar faces among the non-speaking uncredited characters in this episode. For instance, Doreen's other sidekick is Reylene Pearce (who later played Phyllis Hunt) and the prisoner "Dwyer" who brings the tea tray to Erica's office when Vera is entertaining the VJ is Jentah Sobott (who later played Mouse Trapp).

Barbara chalks the opening lines of a famous poem by Coleridge on the wall of solitary .

Greg tends to Karen's bruises, and Vera fills him in on who it was who gave them to her. Ken tries to make Catherine realize how serious her situation is, but she just thinks he is trying to imply that she is unstable. Bert Warren's wife visits the Roberts' and hints strongly that she expects them to pay her compensation for her husband's death. Catherine insists that if she ever speaks to either of them again, it will have to be in the presence of their lawyer. The women hear of Catherine's sentence on the TV news: from her comments, it is clear that Bea ta least had no idea why Catherine was inside Wentworth on remand. Erica questions Vera's decision not to report Doreen's attack on Karen, and points out it is not the prisoner doctor's job to report assaults. Vera acidly agrees. Instead of being moved in with Bea and Karen, Doreen shares a cell with Lizzie and Erica directly reminds Doreen there must be no trouble from her. Lizzie introduces Doreen to their cellmate (a silent knitting prisoner called "Margaret", who is not seen again after this!) and lets Doreen knows she sees right through her "tough" act. Lizzie is called to the Governor's office to be told her brother Angus is dying and is asking to see her: Lizzie's brusque response in "Bugger him!" and refuses to see him. Bea convinces Lizzie she should go, because at least it's a trip out, maybe (as she not so tactfully says) her last chance. Erica is pleased that Lizzie has changed her mind and tells her that she will personally accompany her. Steve Wilson tells Mrs Warren bluntly that she won't get any money, and that her demands could be seen as blackmail or extortion. Doreen greases her hair back and starts to act like Franky, disrupting Karen's arithmetic classes and writes a message "KAREN KILLED FRANKY" on the board for everyone to see. Vera warns Greg to keep his nose out of prison business and not go to the Governor behind her back. Catherine tells Ken that she refuses to plead temporary insanity to get a lighter sentence and starts to worry about the financial implications of paying for the bail and a solicitor. Doreen picks on Lynn for the benefit of her two new cronies, calling her 'Wonky' Warner. Lynn's father visits her and tells her that her mother is in hospital and makes it plain he holds her responsible for her mother's poor state of health. Jean talks to Lynn's father and tries to persuade him to accept and support Lynn rather than reject her. Erica leaves the prison in Vera's capable hands even though Barbara is due to come up before the Visting Justice. After her father's visit, Lynn is about as hard and bitter as Doreen is and hangs around her gang to try to join in their latest plot to steal cigarettes from women who've just got their buyup. Meg is sent to bring Barbara from solitary to the VJ's hearing: on the way there Barbara hints to Meg that she intends to implicate a member of staff in getting drugs into the prison.
